Just saw it on MLB tonight, Cubs get a 20 year old shortstop Addison Russell in return. This is quite the surprise, puts the A's right to the head of the class! Add Billy McKinney & Dan Straley to the Cubs as well.

Regardless of where he was Rick, unless the deal is about money or rehab longshots, he's nowhere in the room. I am so sick of the fucker I could spit nails.

I'll tell you Frank, If I'm a Cubs fan I am so pissed.

Son of a Beach....both of 'em...damn it...!!!

Last I looked the A's SP staff had the lowest ERA in the AL.

On another note, the Bums SP combined ERA is now a incredible 3.00

Kershaw with 36 consecutive scoreless shutout innings...! Move over Orel, next stop Don Drysdale country..., then on to Bulldogs record...! Maybe maybe not, hope so tho'....!!!

M's are toast, are Cano and Felix available ?

Someone needs to call the cops on the A's, they just commited robbery.

...great, just f'n great.

...The A's are clearly in the "win it all this year" mode...but unless the A's can lock up these 2 pitchers with new contracts, the Cubs may have gotten the better end of this deal. Samardzjia is arby eligible next near and Hammel is a FA next year. The Cubs weren't going anywhere anytime soon anyway, and they got 2 first round picks from the A's in return.
...Samardzjia's numbers should be even better after moving from Wrigley to the Oakland Colosseum...Hammel is a good pitcher too, but the A's are essentially getting Hammel on a 3 month rental plan, and Samardzjia for the same thing + an extra year.

...both teams benefitted from this trade...the A's, short term and the Cubs, long term.

Congrats. You know nothing about other teams prospects. The A's get Samardzija for this and next year. Hammel is a FA after next year. Russell is rated the third best prospect in baseball and is a can't miss SS or 3B. The Yanks could have offered more? Really? The Yankees farm system sucks. They don't have any prospect on the same planet talent wise as Russell. I'm shocked the A's gave him up. On top of that they gave up their first round pick McKinney who already has double digit HR's at advanced A ball this year with a good walk to k ratio. I'd go so far to say the Yankees don't have a prospect as good as McKinney. This is a very risky deal for Oakland. If they don't win it all this or next year, the trade is a disaster. They have another big SS prospect who is on the fast track in the minors to replace Russell. I would have thought the A's would trade a guy like Russell for a Sale who is locked up a while.

However, you could make the case that the A's could trade Cespedes or Donaldson in the off-season and get back a bunch of top prospects to replace what they lost.

Not a big Rosenthal fan but the man made a decent report on that trade goal one was to shore up that staff which they did. Given the status of the A's staff they did a nice job on fixing the "what ifs" for the time being. The trade puts lead in the A's pencil, I think though the big surprise was Toronto or Baltimore missing that boat.

...lol...why in the world would the A's trade 2 of their best players for 2 prospects ?...and why in the world would Chicago trade Chris Sale for a prospect?

...but you want to ridicule rick for what he said?

Thank you Ron, you beat me to it.

Also the Cubs are in dire need of a catcher, we have several good prospects there & a very good prospect in pitcher Luis Severino.

Billy Beane and his scouts are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead the
rest of MLB GMs and scouts.

Hey Cashman. Your salary can get the Yankees a shitload of talent. lol

BTW. If anyone thinks the Yankees could have topped Beane's offer,
think again. The Yankee system doesn't have the talent of the A's or
even the Cubs!

Its amazing the way they just swooped down & grabbed these two players leaving everyone else holding there peckers thinking..."What the hell just happened?"

I'll call it now, a west coast world series between the Dodgers & A's.

I am not ready to say west coast yet Rick. Granted that we may not have had enough in the farm system to get these guys, but the fact that we are struggling offensively and we have done so for weeks and yet no move to correct the problem. I remember when any move was better than no move. I feel it starts and stops with Cashman, and I for one after 16 years say it's time. I think his contract is up at the end of this year, let him pasture, but move on...

Frank for some reason the Stiener boys seem to love Cashman, why I've got no f'king idea. So honestly, I don't think he's going anywhere.

Maybe Theo is trying to get Cashman fired, lol!

Good point. With Jeter gone and needing to obviously rebuild/retool....the front office needed fresh blood and new perspective.

Dude, do you know anything about the A's, when players are FA's, etc.? The A's don't have money. Cespedes will be a UFA after next season. In other words. There is no chance he will come back. He'll get 5 years, 100 million easy as a UFA. Donaldson is going to ask for probably 15 to 18 million next year. That's why.

In case you missed it. The White Sox suck. One pitcher doesn't make a pitching staff. The rest of their starters suck. Their bullpen is beyond horrible. Their lineup is shaky at best. You are starting to think like Cashman. Have one or two good players you don't move, try to fill in the rest of the team with crap and expect to win.

Remember that old bathroom graffiti over the urinal " Don't look now, the joke is in your hand" might be seeing that on a sign over the Yankees On Deck Circle if things don't get better.

..."dude"?..."dude"?...what are you, a surfer?

...I'm quite aware of the contracts, but I am impressed that you were able to get better educated by googling.

...and no, I didn't "miss" anything. Sale is under a dirt cheap contract until 2020, unless the Sox decline the team options....maybe you should have googled that too. The Sox have absolutely NO reason to jettison a PROVEN Ace for a prospects that may or may not pan out.

Apparently Giantsrule attended Ridgemont high.

Billy Beane On Acquiring Samardzija, Hammel
By Edward Creech [July 5, 2014 at 1:05pm CDT]
Earlier today, Cubs President Theo Epstein held a conference call to discuss last night’s blockbuster trade of Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the A’s for Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily, and a player to be named later or cash. Afterwards, A’s GM Billy Beane held court with the Bay Area media. Here are the highlights courtesy of John Shea and Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (all links go to Twitter):

Beane indicated the A’s are not done dealing. “We’re not just going to stop and shut everything down. We’ve got 3-plus weeks until the trade deadline.“
Beane explained why he was willing to part with the A’s top two prospects. “We have a team that can win right now. Just collecting young players is not something in our market place we can do.” Beane added, “We have to take the opportunity and grasp it.“
Beane wanted to do the deal early and was not “interested in taking this pursuit down to the deadline.“
Beane said he has been engaged in trade talks involving starting pitching for over a month.
Beane acknowledged the extra year of team control over Samardzija was crucial. “We placed a lot of value on him being here next year. There’s no doubt about that.”
As per his policy, Beane refused to comment on trades not made when asked about David Price.
“I think the narrative that this is a move for the postseason is a bit arrogant. We need to make sure we get there first,” said Beane (as tweeted by Jane Lee of MLB.com) in response to Justin Verlander‘s reaction to the trade (“When I saw that trade, I thought that they made that trade for us. No doubt about it in my mind.” – per MLB.com’s Jason Beck on Twitter).

If Beane is taking a win now at all costs....he could be available next year if the A's fall short.
