This is as healthy as Brandon Roy will ever be, his knees will not improve from where they are, and he looks absolutely dreadful on both ends of the court.

His contract is the epitome of an 'anchor'.

:sigh:

Definitely a scary thought. I wonder if medical retirement comes before the end of the contract. That'll at least create a BREC and be covered by insurance.

I think he has still shown himself to be a capable NBA player. Franchise player playing like this? No. But he isn't "done" by any stretch. I don't think he looks dreadful as an NBA player. I think he just doesn't look like the Brandon Roy we know, and unfortunately, Nate seems to treat him like he still is. I think playing like this, there'd be other teams that would take on his contract as a #2 guy, and I think he could still be a good #2 guy. I don't personally want to get rid of him, but along those lines, I think he'd look great, as-is, in Dallas, alongside Dirk. Maybe Orlando alongside Dwight.

Good post. Not much to add.

I thought the NBA took out the insurance on all its players, and the company that handles the policy could elect 5 contracts that it will not cover. I also think that Brandon is one of those 5.

Oh thank god; I was worried something good might happen to the team.

we weren't going anywhere this year without oden and next year there won't be a season so really only 3 years of being an anchor : )

which is only 1 year more than we carried Steve Francis' 14 million a year for.

Yeah, his contract will be pretty bad for a #2 guy on a team. Same way Rashard Lewis' is. Brand. Arenas. Rip. Baron Davis.

I'm not saying we're in any sort of great situation with his deal. I was posting primarily to his abilities, and that he is far from done. And his contract, while bad, if necessary, could be moved, IMO, to the right team.

?? Uhm. Ok. Great contribution. Thanks.

maybe this will clear it up for you and can be the next theme song for the Blazers new marketing campaign.

You're the sixth man and the Rose Garden is OUR HOUSE, so everybody on your feet as the team does it in YOUR BUTT!

...I call not Oden.

Saddest development of a horrific season.

Today may very well be the lowest point in the last 25 years for the Blazers

Brandon has turned into a pre-madonna of epic proportion!!! Forget he has no knees, tonight showed his true colors. He loafed up and down the court, played no defense and yelled every freaking time someone brushed him looking for a foul. He got stuffed taking bad shots how many times, and couldn't hit the rim on a handful of others. He thinks he should be getting Kobe calls.... what a laugh!!!!

This team just got swept by the worst teams in the east and our allstar did almost nothing! He needs to be on the bench from now on!

He duped this organization for 90 mill and now we see what that money really buys!

WOW!

Look, we're 0-6 since Roy's return, and it's not just a coincidence. This team was playing better basketball without him. The games are too dreadfully boring to watch right now. I can't imagine spending my whole evening and $100 to actually see them live.

Any of you who've seen the Blazers play over the last 6 games know what I"m talking about. Incredibly boring stagnant offense, no heart, just complete ineptitude all around.

If I were Cho, I'd be working the phones, trying to get Roy out of town. Trade him for an expiring contact if you have to.

It's sad, that in this day in age, one guy is getting 15 million dollars to dribble a ball around and bore the hell out of people. Oregonians should be spending those millions to help the local economy, not funnel it into the pockets of these losers.

I've got to think that tonights loss had to put a pretty hard nail in Nate's coffin! These were the worst teams except for the Celtics in the whole NBA and they all beat our team! GOOD GRIEF!!!!

Why in god's name would any team want to exchange an expiring contract (valuable) for Brandon's bloated 5 year albatross (not valuable)? We're stuck with him.

Short term, I think the Blazers need to move Roy to the bench, and put Batum back in the starting lineup.

It actually could make both the starters better (having someone who can play really good defense would be a welcome addition), and it would give the bench someone who's willing to take shots (and Roy ought to be able to produce some offense if he's only expected to play 10-15 minutes a night).

There's no shame in being a 6th man. Rasheed Wallace did it for a Blazers' team that was within sight of the NBA Finals. Manu Ginobili played that role on championship Spurs' teams. Time to try Brandon there.

I think the Blazers should really try different roles for Roy offensively. whether he is the primary ball handler/point guard or what not.

I think we just need to lower expectations for him. There will be a turnaround eventually, he'll just have to modify his game. He's not getting traded.

That sounds good on paper, and in principle I completely agree with it, but let's be real, that kind of move is unlikely to have a positive impact on a team that looks emotionally spent; a group completely bereft of chemistry and lacking an identity -- a team ultimately built around Brandon.

If Roy goes to the bench he may eventually adapt to it, but I think it's going to be quite the adjustment for his teammates to seize control of the alpha dog role when they've grown so accustomed to playing second banana. I can see Matthews maybe doing it because I think he's got a pretty strong personality (a natural leader even) and Miller could probably make the switch fairly easy, but even with Roy playing let's say 20-25 minutes a night, I think we're going to see a lot of tug-of-war between he and the rest of the team as he tries to reassert himself and figures out how and where he fits into the overall structure of new non-Roy centric offense.

I want to make one thing clear. I don't think Brandon is a bad guy nor even a selfish guy, I think he's a very proud guy and that he feels a lot of responsibility to try and live up to his contract, but because of that I don't think he's going to be able to let go of his status as the team's focal point without a whole lot of struggle. Even if he does let go of it, I think that could sap whatever confidence and "swagger" he has left in himself and when that's gone, just how much use is he going to be?

The $80 million dollar 6th man? I don't think thats going to happen anytime soon.

I'm almost to a point where I'm not sure whats better a loss, or a win. Atleast a few years back we could've said well we want to win to show a culture of winning to our young guys. Thats not the case anymore, we really aren't trying to cultivate any young guys aside from maybe Armon and Batum. The more we lose, the more I salivate over Terrence Jones, Irving or Kemba Walker in a Blazer jersey.

Well, probably a good idea to get that adjustment started, because I think it's the only solution in the relative short-term. Roy's contract is not trade-able, and he's not a ruined player eligible for an insurance buyout. The idea would be to find the role that he's best suited for, and I would argue it's as a sixth man. And, as Nate frequently points out, when it comes to ego - he could still finish games!

I hope they can get to that point.
