(CNN)The Supreme Court on Thursday said two provisions of an Arizona voting law that restrict how ballots can be cast do not violate the historic Voting Rights Act that bars regulations that result in racial discrimination.

The ruling will limit the ability of minorities to challenge state laws in the future that they say are discriminatory under the Voting Rights Act.

The vote in the case is 6-3 breaking along conservative-liberal ideological lines. Justice Samuel Alito delivered the majority opinion.

My wife has numerous old high school classmates who have moved to the Phoenix area over the past 40 years. They were constantly asking when we were going to visit until (within the last 8 months) I finally told them flat out that, except for Canada I don’t do foreign travel……especially to third world, shit hole countries. So they finally quit asking…….that they now think my wife is married to a complete asshole (if they didn’t feel that way before) is an actual badge of honor for me. Shame on them for allowing a bunch of sun baked rednecks to shit on the Constitution….and even more shame on the white supremacist Supreme (now we know how it got it’s name) Court for upholding such an undemocratic travesty. This country just gets more fucked up and backwards leaning every day. All because a bunch of inbred white people don’t want to share their privilege with the rest of humanity. And it’s only going to get worse……

Not surprised. Alito and Thomas never met a civil rights they didn't hate. Roberts got the nod from Bush as a reward for his lifetime work against voting rights. And Trump openly said he wanted justices who would keep the wrong people from voting.

This is good. It keeps election processes open & transparent.

The Arizona law requires people to vote within their associated precinct. Also it prevents ballot harvesting. I don't see how that is so controversial.

Some people move for work between registering to vote and voting...it's a prohibitive law, not a transparent one in my view...Arizona residents might be working in an oilfield in Alaska when the vote comes up....not sure stopping minorities from contesting voting laws is open or transparent either...in my view it's unnecessary voter rights suppression

By design these laws are setup to look that way exactly so they can pass muster in court. The reality is they are in actuality written so they prevent certain segments of society from voting. In this case it is almost exclusively written to prevent native Americans from having access to vote.

In 2020 there was a massive effort to get more native Americans to vote in Arizona, most dont have cars and most live on reservations. Most of the citizens there relied on a few individuals within the reservation collecting their ballots and dropping them off. This new law prohibits that, and it’s pretty obvious why when you look at the breakdown of how those individuals voted and who those folks are who are writing the law.

Alito said states can enact any restrictions if needed to combat voter fraud. Millions lose right to vote over imaginary fraud. Also if laws have disparate effects on communities of color it's oK as long as it isn't too bad.

Arizona Republicans repeatedly changed precinct locations in Black and Latinx neighborhoods. Black, Latinx and Native American voters were twice as likely to go to wrong precinct in consequence.

Jim Crow laws that disenfranchised the entire Black population never mentioned race. Grandfather clause gave right to vote to those whose grandfathers could vote but no enslaved person could. Poll taxes applied to all but Black citizens were more likely to be too poor to pay. Literacy tests applied to all but there were no public schools for Black students.

That's why the voting rights act was passed.

And why it has been overturned.
