I'd really like a veteran superstar who can teach our team how to win. Who can get in the face of either Roy or LMA, and who can feed Oden the ball. One that Nate can trust.
Yeah, there's a lot to be said for our SF problems. But seriously, and I don't care if it makes the entire forum here barf all over me, I'd break the bank for Nash (and less so for Kidd).
I'm skeptical about how good this team can get on their own. So we can either "bake it" without a few missing ingredients, or, just go All-Veteran
Note: I did NOT say "trade for old scrubs"
While this is a major pipe dream, it does present a relatively (IMO) equitable solution to a few problems teams have right now.
PHX blows it up. For Shaq, Nash and Amare (46M this year, more next year) they get Bayless and Thomas, as well as $25M in expiring contracts (including RLEC). They have to pick up Jaric, which kinda throws a wrench in it, but he needed to be moved. Heck, just not paying Shaq next year more than covers the rest of Jaric's entire contract. They get the MEM 1st (top 2 protected)
MEM moves Gay, their 1st, and their two bad contracts (Darko and Jaric) to get Amare, Outlaw and Blake's expiring contract. That leaves them with PG: Lowry/Conley/Blake, SG: Mayo, SF: Outlaw PF: Amare C: Gasol. Amare's the Man there, and some talent to go with him.
CHI gives up Deng and Gooden and TT for Gay, Przy and Diogu and Darko...two contracts that expire before 2010. They significantly upgrade their frontline, and switch from Deng to Gay.
We do a mass consolidation, getting good veterans at our positions of need. I thought about Hinrich for us instead of Nash (makes the trade scenario a bit easier), but in the end I think Nash would make our players so much better it's not even funny. He's used to tossing it down to Shaq, he could get Oden involved, etc. Shaq's got at least 18 months left in the tank, especially if he's getting 25-30 mpg on a team that's going for it all. Deng is a pretty good SF for us. We're thinner, now, but significantly better in the top 8.
Nash/Sergio
Roy/Rudy
Deng/Batum/Webster
LMA/Shav
Oden/Shaq
We're left a bit thin up front. We have to sign a vet-minimum PF. I'd go to war with that.
Plus, 30M in expiring contracts before the summer of LBJ
