Sell me on the WNBA

Summer League is done. The World Cup is done. It is impossible to give a shit about baseball. What's to look forward to for the next few months? Somebody sell me on the WNBA. This is a serious request, not an excuse for people who do not like it to make tired criticisms of it. If you watch it, what teams are worth watching? Who are the players to watch (beyond big names like Sue Bird, Britney Griner and Della Donne)?

The night we won the summer league title, Sportscenter lead with two WNBA games. One was won at the buzzer from beyond half court and the other was of a player setting the scoring record with 53 I believe. I wouldn’t normally watch the WNBA, but I at least thought it was cool to see those highlights and the fact that it was their lead.

It's a form of entertainment, just like any other form of entertainment. You either find something interesting about it.... or you don't.

For instance, I'm not at all interested in watching high school basketball, and most college hoops are boring for me, but I love college football. So my recommendation would be to watch it.... and you are either entertained or you're not.

Watch MMA instead. It goes year round. Women or men fights are entertaining. The women give no fucks and just attack. The men are usually more tentative because they know they can get knocked the fuck out at any moment.

If there was an WNBA team that played in Portland, I would definitely recommend being a season ticket holder. Low cost and great experience. Love that I got in early for the Thorns. Probably enjoy it as much as the Blazers or Timbers.

On TV , not so much.

Portland used to have a WNBA team called the Portland Fire, but it only lasted 2-3 seasons before Paul Allen shut down the team after losing a reported $1,000,000.

This is back when the blazers were $PAMing (Spending Paul Allen's Money) the league with the highest payroll in the NBA, and were reportedly hemorrhaging millions of dollars every season. I've seen 3 WNBA games, 2 in Portland and 1 in NYC at MSG, and they were all enjoyable. When I saw the WNBA game in Madison Square Garden I remember the PA system blasting "Hey, Dirty, baby I got your money" I couldn't believe they'd play that song at a women's sporting event. smh

The Fire's star player was Jackie Stiles and she was really good, but quite injury prone from what I remember.

Portland had another women's team for a short time called the Power but that league was always going to fold.

Watch some games and then decide for yourself. They play some pretty good basketball. Timbers also provide some good entertainment and then in a month English Premier League soccer starts. Still lots to enjoy.

I go to a Ducks basketball game on occasion...enjoy the hell out of it...loved Altman's coaching...watched Dillon Brooks and Jordan Bell several times...I also go to the occasional Ems game....most often I go to the local high school games and cheer for the kids ...the aren't a winning team often but they play hard...plan to go see some Beavers baseball when I'm able again....watched a couple of Beavers women's basketball games when my son was a student there...it's all fun to me, the high school games are filled with neighbors and former students I"ve known for years...easy to cheer for. At 5 bucks a ticket it's a cheap Friday night out with the wife.

I went to the occasional OSU women's Basketball and Volleyball games in college when I was friends with someone who was on the team. I might take my daughters to a WNBA game if we had a local team, if they even wanted to go, which they probably wouldn't. My one daughter would like to go to a Timbers game. They love going to Blazers games. Other than the Blazers the only thing I have any interest in or time for is OSU and UofO football and occasionally basketball, and baseball once the playoffs start. That's it.
