Geoffrey C. Arnold basically doesn't know shit about hoops (for a guy who covers the league). He just called the Blazers a really good defensive team and cited their points against average as the reason.

Are pace adjusted stats really that hard to learn for a guy who makes his living writing about a particular sport?

ps. I also wonder how many times Rashad Floyd was dropped on his head when he was playing Arena League football.

I've found Arnold's articles to be very disappointing, but it seems most 'announcers' (including our own) point to the points allowed statistic to suggest we're a good defensive team. Apparently it is VERY hard for announcers to learn these things.

maybe they're just trying to relay stats the average fan can understand :dunno:

yes MIXUM I'm making excuses, but it's hard for me to believe the O's writers are really as lazy and stupid as they seem

I dunno. It sure seems basketball writers have fallen behind baseball writers when it comes to using advanced stats.

I will admit that Bill Simmons (cringe) actually hit on an interesting point: baseball is not a "team" game in the same sense as basketball or football. Individual stats are easier to analyze in the context of baseball.

That's hardly a novel insight on the part of Simmons. It's the reason why statistics in baseball have always been more important/ prominent than stats in other sports.

Or you could say that the pace that the Blazers play at is part of their defensive approach.
