Sen. John McCain, 80, has been diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma, a type of brain tumor, Mayo Clinic doctors directly involved in the senator’s care told CNN exclusively. The doctors spoke directly to CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

The senator underwent surgery to remove a blood clot on Friday at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. Lab results from that surgery confirmed the presence of glioblastoma associated with the blood clot.

Glioblastoma is a particularly aggressive tumor that forms in the tissue of the brain and spinal cord, according to the American Brain Tumor Association.

John has had a hell of a run but I fear the worst with this news....my old coworkers husband died of a similar tumor and was 20 years younger....took a year, with chemo......I hope he beats it...he's a tough SOB and definitely has earned the title hero...

Like Sly, I don't agree with some of his politics, and frankly, I think he should have retired years ago.

But.....I most certainly do respect the hell out of the man, and he has been invaluable to our country.

If Ted Kennedy was "The Lion" of the Senate, then John McCain most certainly was "The Warrior" of the Senate.

Get well soon Senator.

I am not a republican and dont agree with John on many things, but I respect the hell out of him. I hope he beats this. That said he should resign from the senate. Probably should have some time ago. I wonder if this tumor has anything to do with his strange manner of questioning in recent hearings.

John should retire and enjoy the rest of his life how ever long that may be. I am sure the state of Arizona can find a republican to replace him.

Speaking of brain tumors...

You edited your typos?!? How dare you fuck up my joke!

I have no respect at all for John McCain, am of the opinion that he is one of the most corrupt and dishonest Politician-for-sale sleazeballs our government has ever made filthy rich, who shamelessly exploited his war misfortunes into a fortune stolen from Real Americans.

He represents everything evil in our entrenched deep state government.

I've been hoping for this as it's the only way to make him go away and stop wreaking havoc on my Freedoms.

Regardless of his politics I respect the hell out of McCain. He adds a big part to what little dignity remains in American politics.

My grandfather was diagnosed with this and was dead within a couple of weeks.

Let's hope he doesn't linger that long.

If he had Obamacare he'd be in hospice already.

What exactly has he done that is corrupt and how has he wreaked havoc on your freedoms?

And he refuses to raise his arm up to salute the flag!

Whether I like, agree with, or respect an individual does not change the fact that as a humanist I do not want to see anyone suffer. I wish Senator McCain a full and speedy recovery or, if that is not possible, ease at the end. I also hope, since he is a Senator, that he reflects on the fact that many do not have the health care he does and that he was prepared to take away health care from millions of Americans. That he at least does not have to worry about bankrupting his family, or becoming homeless, due to medical bills. And that we all deserve the same should we face such a catastrophe.

Also that anyone can get sick. It is not a matter of being "irresponsible" or "making bad choices".

He's been kind to people I know.

I'm not a fan, but I do wish him a speedy recovery.
