Picked this up the other day when I brought back LA Noire.
SOD is a third-person horror survival shooter. It is very similar to Dead Space and Resident Evil. Never mind the absolutely shit title it was sidled with. The game is much more creative than that.
The game is made by Grasshopper Manufacture who are responsible for the No More Heroes series, so you can figure the game will have a kooky sense of humour and a lot of variety, which it does.
There are a few things that really stand out in the game. One is the music and sound atmosphere. It is top notch. Another are the environments. The game runs on the Unreal engine and you can see the similarities to other games like Arkham Asylum when you play it. Colourful and interesting to look at. But most importantly the game is well written. The two main characters (you, Garcia Hotspur, and your demon companion, Johnson) have some witty rapport. There are narrated storybooks in the game that are funny. Overall the game is pretty creative if you look past the fact the gameplay itself is derivative.
Worth checking out.
