...neither Roberts nor Nova covering 1B...Jeter has got to get to that ball in the 1st inning too.

That play was all on Nova. If you're not pitching well at least show some hustle & field your position.

...that's Roberts' play too, and he hesitated big time...by the time Nova realized he could field the bunt, he wasn't going to beat the runner to first either...bad play all around.

...and yet another ball that a younger Jeter would have had.

...another questionable play by Roberts...this is ugly.

...Roberts is a much better defensive 2Bman than he has shown so far this year.

It pisses me off that we also have to deal with this bullshit at first base again.

I have been saying it for months. I just can't believe that Cashman did NOTHING! regarding a back up 1st baseman. I mean they could have at least resigned Overbay $1.5M with Milwaukee Or Reynolds $2M also with Milwaukee.

Jeter playing SS at 40 and Roberts with such little time at 2B over the last few years - can't really understand the thinking as to how much these guys are being counted on. And game 8 - Cervelli is your 1B? This is not sustainable, and moves need to be made.

It's an infield put together with band-aids, but they knew this going into the season. I just can't believe it wasn't addressed.

That's what's even worse rick - only the most ignorant of homers saw the state of the infield, saw that there was no 3B, and the guys slated to play 1B, 2B, and SS are all coming off injuries, are all old (Tex isn't really old, but has told us enough times over the last 2 years that is in fact old), and believed this would work itself out as is.

Ownership keeps referring to all the money they spent but they ignored the infield. Roberts should never be counted on as an ever day 2nd bsseman, Jeter is 40 years old and Tex coming off a major injury and hurt already. Just no excuse for seeing a blowout game like this. They wonder why attendance is down.

There's no escaping the fact that the infield defense is going to be tough to deal with this season.

...fwiw, better pitching will make the defense look better.

It's why the size of the deals they made this off-season was troubling. You can't spend as much $$$ as they did this off-season and walk away with so many holes yet to fill. The 2013 Yankees roster was horrible - give another GM $400M to spend to improve it significantly, and I bet that GM comes up with a more complete team. My feeling is that once the fake-$189M cap was exceeded - this team would arbitrarily stop short of building out a complete roster via $$$. Fact is - look at 2B and 3B - they probably needed to spend another $50M to plug those holes.

I think a better defense can make the pitching look better. If Jeter gets to that ball in the 1st inning - they may be out of that inning giving up 0 instead of 3.

... 20 hits.

It's 1 game - the pitching until now has been pretty decent in general, aside from CC's "1 bad innings". Offense could really start helping a little more - especially Beltran and McCann. Both had ABs today that could have made this a lot closer when it was still a game.

...the OP was referring to the shoddy defense of this "one game"...and when you give up 20 hits, you're not going to beat anyone, regardless of defense.

Well in this game - nothing worked. Offense, Defense, and Pitching. You can single out 1 area, but would be ignoring the woeful ineffectiveness of the other 2 areas. They were all horrible. Tanaka tomorrow - let' hope the offense and defense don't let him down.
