At least seven people are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the base's public affairs office told NBC News on Thursday.

The official would not give his name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN.

KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post.

The base was reportedly on lockdown. Two nearby school districts were also being locked down.

Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, and 60 miles northeast of Austin. The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.

So the question is, is it disgruntled soldiers or terrorist?

"Dual attacks", whatever that means. Two suspects captured, 6 SWAT members injured. Nine are confirmed dead at this point.

12 dead and 31 injured soldiers are suspects

A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. Imagine that.......................

This will make things harder for Arab Americans who serve in all branches of the military. I believe the majority of them serve with honor.

I was also surprised that it was an officer.

crazy stuff, but when you think about it america is still damn too easy to attack, there's barely any security anywhere, (malls, hospitals, schools, etc)

RIP to the victims :(

Patriot Act and privacy intrusions be damned!

Fixed.

There is a damn reason why stereotypes exist.

Is it sad that I'm not surprised an Arab was behind this?

This happened at an army fort, with thousands of armed soldiers, checkpoints, security screens...

"Security" is unattainable in modern day society.

The best you can hope for is freedom from Big Brother's grip.

You are right that it is sad. How many mass shootings on American soil have been committed by Arabs this past year? This is the first I believe among the many others. Have you grown up yet since reading my post?

Thousands of armed soldiers? Ever been on an army base? The only ammunition not in storage is either on the firing range or in an MP's belt pouch. And the ammo on the firing range ain't going nowhere but downrange.

American soil means nothing to me when it comes to this. This shit happens regularly like this, it is a stereotype that I have of my own people (I'm Arabic), and it was one of the 1st thoughts that popped in my head when reading about it before seeing the dudes name.

Being a well known officer at the army base is pretty good camoulflage.

Military officials say Hasan, 39, was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July

A psychiatrist goes off the deep end and goes on a shooting spree killling innocent people . . . I thought they were suppose to help stop people from doing this.

Just reported, Hasan is wounded but still alive. Hopefully he lives and will be found competent enough to stand trail... so we can execute this POS.

A man who was given a complete government free ride towards a medical degree chooses this as a thank you.

Yes BlazerWookie... I was in Army and spend 2 years at Ft Hood and it always bothered me that there was more access to ammunition off post than on. Seriously... well coordinated attacks could just about take over a base. The ammo is so locked up by the time anyone could get to it... it would be over. MPs have ammo but handguns are no match for the firepower someone could bring.

Well, I think from this day forward there will be a lot more armed soldiers at Ft. Hood.

I know it happened at any army fort but I"m just saying when you think about it, we are not secure at all, we're basically asking to be attacked by the enemy with providing free access anywhere.

They were speculating a lot of the injuries might have been caused by friendly fire.
