Vaccines should start to be available in December, should the professional sports leagues be given top priority to them?

Should they be given the vaccines before medically fragile people in like nursing homes get them?

No, they are young healthy people, they should wait their turn.
First, health care workers.
Then, other frontline workers.
Then, those with health issues.
Finally, rest of us.
I'd add firemen, grocers, food industry workers, gas station attendents, mail carriers, teachers, pretty much anybody who keeps the power turned on in a storm....etc...

For these vaccines to work effectively everything must go exactly right. No margin for error! And there has got to be enough people to get it. I think I heard on CNN this morning that 1 in 4 people say they won't get the vaccine. Unfortunately, If Biden trys to mandate the vaccine that's only going to cause more chaos.

Basketball players are essential economic actors.

As Patrick Ewing once pointed out, in a talk before economists at an academic seminar, "What people don't realize is that while athletes make a lot of money, they also spend a lot of money."

Well, I ain't in no nursing home . . . yet, but I should get the vaccine before them.
By the way, there are now two people who were in my dialysis ward who have been moved upstairs to the 8th floor to be treated for the Covid-19 infection. They came around Thursday and Saturday testing us for the infection. I had to turn them down because of my doctor's recommendation that I not do it since I've already been to the emergency room three times for nose bleeds that wouldn't stop. I'm scared to death of another nose bleed.

SlyPokerDog prediction: NBA players and the NFL players in the playoffs will be vaccinated by the end of January.

Thats a bit of a stretch. Most people are going to want to take the vaccine... just not first. I wanna take like the 2nd or 3rd go around after we see some short term results. I live in a basement... I ain't got nowhere to go.

And Biden won't mandate it. Thats just dumb.

No. They can get vaccines at the same time as anybody else... Or I guess they could probably afford too buy some of Russia's vaccine...

Either way, they should be very low risk, and will certainly have access to the absolute best and latest treatments available at the time.

I marked other because this distribution won't be happening in just three waves... essential workers, then old and sick people and then regular Americans. From what I've read, yes essential workers and those at greatest risk will be getting it first, then people with less risk factors but still at risk, then from what I've read they are going to distribute to the most vulnerable communities and follow through with that until the people at the lowest risk get it last. So I think the most healthy and rich people in the country (professional athletes without asthma or diabetes) will get it second to last right before healthy children.

I foresee the RICH & connected getting 1st dibs, after of course our Dictator, and other politicians. Then Hospital Staff, 1st Responders, Seniors, People with Underlying conditions, Middle Income People, then Poor Stiffs. All 'bout those Benjamins.

You're probably right and that's very wrong.

Don't forget Hollywood. Gotta keep those movies and TV shows churning out.

I'm a peer recovery coach at a mental healthcare facility. Does this mean I'm getting first? I didn't know it was coming so soon.

I thought you were an Uber driver in Washington!

Probably not. I'd imagine they would go to hospital workers and the most vulnerable and at risk first, as it should.

I'm a wine chemist and I drive Amazon Flex on the side. Both are "essential" If measuring cold stability of a wine or delivering corn chips makes me essential, then hell ya sports should be too. But essential or not, you don't get the vaccine at first unless you have major risk factors or work directly with folks with rona.

The CDC doesn't even give an answer on emergency use until December 11th. Then there are a few more hoops to jump through, followed by the tricky logistics of shipping and storing something that needs to stay at 70 below 0. The experts I saw way in said that a realistic expectation is the beginning of the year but that is still really soon.

It depends on how much money they’re willing to spend.

Last as they will be in a very managed environment/protocol more than the average Joe. But they are young and more healthy than most plus their age group is hardly effected as a percentage compared to older groups.
Use science and data as a guide.

@SlyPokerDog , you turned this into a matter of “should” as opposed to “will”, which is way different from my original comment.

My wife is one of those "essential workers" as she is a critical care nurse.
She said she would not be reluctant to take it as soon as available. But I still debate with her if we should use the elderly and the medically fragile as "guinea pigs". Maybe try it on others first?

I'm pretty sure I made this thread before your comment.

You’re right. You just linked to this poll from the other thread.

So, the clear “ethical” winner would seem on the surface to be that healthcare and essential workers get the vaccine first, then geezers (my group, by the way) and other vulnerable portions of the population, and finally the general populace. There have been other ideas floated, including one that would give it to the younger folks right after the healthcare workers based, apparently, on the notion that they are the dumbasses most responsible for community spread. Be that as it may, one of the biggest problems is going to be getting the word to that group that getting vaccinated is the smart thing to do, particularly in the minority communities where it’s running rampant. If I was Adam Silver, I’d probably pitch the idea that I have professional basketball players with a ton of credibility in those communities all around the country who can help pitch the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. Seeing ads with guys like Dame and LeBron getting vaccinated could be a big help. Unless we get about 70% of the population vaccinated, the pandemic doesn’t end.
