And even though Portland holds the rights to both players, it has been three draft classes since the Blazers acquired them, so they essentially will be treated as free agents, meaning the Blazers will have to use cap space or part of their midlevel exception to sign them. Buchanan said the team will reach out to both players before free agency starts on July 1, but negotiations could drag out well into the free agent signing period.

Bummer.

Shitty. Wait, how does that work exactly?

I'm guessing they could pay the players as much or as little as they want, but we have to have the cap space to do it. I'm not 100% clear on what it means either.

I didn't think you received the mid level if you were under the cap.

You don't... but I'm wondering if we could use a mid-level to sign them if we go over the cap or if there's a deadline for us to sign them.

I can see Freeland being a much bigger priority than Claver ... either way, I get the feeling our cap room is going to start vanishing in a hurry without a whole lot to show for it.

Maybe something like they sign Dragic, keep Nic and bring Freeland over and add two lotto picks ... we'll see.

I don't think we sign either one if we sign Dwill, but since the best bet is were not getting him then small contracts like the one tiago splitter got won't hurt our cap space that much.
