The Fort Wayne Mad Ants defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce 125-112 Friday night in the last-ever regular season game at the Sioux Falls Arena. Tony Mitchell scored an NBA Development League season-high tying 49 points to help the Mad Ants clinch a playoff berth for the first time in their six-year history.
The game remained close throughout the first half as Sioux Falls (25-24) led 29-25 after the first quarter and 57-56 at halftime. Sioux Falls shot 55.8 percent (24-of-43) from the field in the opening half while Fort Wayne shot 53.5 percent (23-of-43).
Fort Wayne (27-22) outscored Sioux Falls 39-31 in the third quarter to take a 95-88 lead after three and pushed the lead to 14 points (108-94) with 7:11 to go in the contest following a 3-pointer from Sadiel Rojas. Sioux Falls went on a 16-7 run to cut the deficit to 115-110 but Fort Wayne scored eight straight points to secure the victory.
Sioux Falls needs a win tomorrow night at Iowa and Maine needs to lose at Erie to qualify for the playoffs.
Mitchell scored 49 points on 16-of-30 shooting from the field and added six rebounds. Anthony Harris recorded 20 points and nine assists while Chris Porter contributed 19 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
James Mays posted a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Skyforce. Andre Barrett also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 assists while Demetris Nichols posted 17 points and six rebounds.
Fort Wayne visits Tulsa tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET. Sioux Falls visits Iowa tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT.
