Solving our next BIG problem: Salary Cap

Due to our spending this summer and the implementation of CJ's contract next season.....as I understand it......we will be in a very difficult situation with the Cap. We'll be in Luxury Tax level and (at this point in time) will also have the REPEATER TAX applied.

Basically - we've spent more than a team is supposed to spend all at once.
There are no upcoming contracts to expire and provide any relief.

Plumlee will be negotiating a new contract next Summer.

What are the possible solutions? Will we be trying to trade for expiring contracts to get out of Repeater level?
Will PA just pay the tax?

New CBA negotiations are already underway and a new agreement will be announced before the end of the season. The salary cap is only going to go up. We will not have cap problems.

My guess is there will be a trade at some point. Although I don't know who our most appealing players are since we have so much money locked into certain contracts. But we have enough salary cap experts here that I'm sure we can ascertain as to who will go and when..... but maybe they'll just pay the tax.

Silver has kept the owners well informed on the direction and progress of the CBA negotiations. Paul Allen has told Olshey all of this.

Last year people said Olshey overpaid for Aminu and Davis. Now those contracts look like absolute bargains. Last year we choked on how much Wesley Matthews got paid, this year Crabbe got paid the same. All of the deals signed this summer are fine.

mmm, Id say a few average and a few unknowns still... or young guys with potential upside.

Average, to me, sounds like they have hit their peak and are average, but this isn't the case at all.

As it stands now, we are a shade under the LT for the 2016-17 season.

Next season, when CJ's contract kicks in, we will be paying the luxury tax. That assumes we keep Plums at his current salary or he walks. He's obviously going to get more, so...

Luxury tax penalty is assessed as the payroll at the end of the season. That means that the end of the 2017-18 season. That really means we have until the trade deadline NEXT season to get under the LT if the idea is to not pay it.

We won't be paying repeater unless we are in the LT for 3 of the past 4 seasons. So if we pay it next season and the year after and the year after... or next, the season after, skip a season, and the year after.

Strategically, you don't want two strikes against you for the repeater tax unless you're willing to pay serious penalties and be limited how you can trade.

NO has done a terrific job of keeping us under the LT. We're right at the cusp. He used every penny he had, made the jigsaw puzzle fit.

We could be right at the LT and a player earns a bonus (makes 1st team all nba, all star team, etc.) that puts us over.

First, it is not “our” problem. It is Paul Allen’s problem, unless you are volunteering to pay the luxury tax.

If Paul Allen is happy with the contract and cap situation, then I am tickled pink.

I would like to thank PA for committing to put the best team together to entertain us, regardless of cost. You can not ask more than that from an owner.

I'd be more worried about it if the players were over 30 years of age or on the last year of a contract...I think Neil did it right by paying for the future now and weeding assets when opportunities arise. Only Mason is playing for a contract and we're probably in good position to tweak the roster at the deadline by moving a big for assets or draft picks..really Olshey has set up the team for the long run...a lot of teams break the bank for old stars like DHoward but we've bucked the trend and invested in guys just on the launching pads of their careers. Going to be a fun 5 year era for Blazer fans.

Many teams have spent a ton of money trying to win last seasons championship. NO is spending a ton of money trying to win next seasons championship.

Example, the Nets spent a ton of money on aging FAs. And then they mortgaged their future by trading their future draft picks for aging stars. They tried to win the previous years championship. The Nets are now in big trouble. Their aging players are done, or near done, and they have few, if any, assets to acquire new young talent.

NO has bet on the future. The majority of his players are young enough to improve their skills and productivity. Plus we have a nice basketful of draft picks to fill in future holes with.

It must suck to be a Nets fan, and it’s a good day to be a Blazer fan.

The Front Office seems to have put their chips on a championship window in the 2017-2018 thru 2020-2021 seasons. It seems like a really smart move, too. LeBron will have aged out of perfection, Chris Paul will be old, OKC, SA, and DAL will be all be dismantled, and Golden State will have had to pay the piper for their team.

Even if we do absolutely nothing between now and 2020-2021, our line up will consist of 28-31 year old veterans (old man Ed Davis will be 32) who have all played half a decade together, with our two (or more?) star players just hitting 30 years old. Reminds me of the 1991-92 team.
