Although with him being an UFA I guess his salary retention means nothing since they're not going to have to worry about having free space for the remainder of the season anyway. Get a 3rd or better and its fine.
Here's the overall Reilly Smith/Carson Soucy journey:
Drury traded 2nd and 5th round picks to the Pens for Smith. The expectation was Smith would fill a top 6 RW role, failed miserably.
Drury traded Smith to Vegas for a 3rd round pick and Brisson, who has never played a game for the Rangers.
Drury flipped the 3rd round pick to Vancouver for Soucy. This trade wasted a 3rd round pick (which Drury just got back), but worse to me was Soucy's $3.25M cap hit this season left the Rangers no cap space to add a much-needed 3rd line wing.
Drury traded Soucy to the Isles for a 3rd round pick.
Overall: Drury traded 2nd and 5th round picks FOR a 3rd round pick and Brisson and wasted cap space on Soucy this season that could have been used for a 3rd line wing.

Spot on, for a UFA to be, salary retention doesn't really mean anything - the only impact it can/does have is you can only retain salary on 3 players at once. Not retaining any salary with Soucy leaves the Rangers with 3 salary retention spots open still (I doubt that matters because I don't see us needing to retain salary on 3 players anyway).
I still think Brisson if he gets a call up in some team sticks with him for 82 to 120 games can become something. Brisson had eight points in 15 games for Vegas and the dumbasses sent them down and that ruined his confidence.
