...on the flip side, even in rural Central Oregon, Redmond School District sent out this message last week:

Our students, staff, and families come from diverse backgrounds, representing both the United States and countries from around the world. State law requires that all students be provided equal access to public education, regardless of their immigration status or that of their families or guardians.

As a sanctuary state, Oregon law (ORS 181A.826) our district will not provide immigration officials with access to school property beyond the front office, without a court order. We will also not remove a staff or student for immigration law enforcement purposes without a court order. These laws ensure that everyone in Oregon can live, work, play, attend school and access government services without fear.

In the Redmond School District, all students living within our boundaries are guaranteed a free and appropriate public education, regardless of immigration status. We are committed to treating every member of our community with respect, grace, and dignity. We will welcome every child into our classrooms and provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed, while fostering an environment where mutual respect and civil behavior are upheld.

We understand that these times may bring uncertainty and fear for some families. Please know that our schools are places where children can learn, grow, and thrive, free from intimidation or fear. Every student has the right to feel safe, respected, and welcome. We believe in the potential of every student and are committed to helping them achieve success in our schools and society.

I work in a school where we are literally 2 miles from the Rio Grande and a lot of my students make their way across from Nuevo Laredo every morning to get an education. I know there was some concern over what might happen but so far I haven't heard of a single student being denied from coming across.
