The drive to Boston from Bristol is quicker than the drive to New York is. "A hell of a lot closer" lol.2nd. Being in Red Sox territory has little to do with being closer. Many Vermont cities are closer to NY than Boston. Why then is the state firmly Red Sox supporters (even those cities)? It doesn't have to do with where they are closest to.

You forgot the random Yankees fans scattered around the nation. For some reason, a lot of casual fans I met like the Yankees.And the whole country of Taiwan who worship Chien-Ming Wang.

You win 4 Championships in half a decade, and you win over the hearts and minds of many a casual fan. The history. It's what drew me in the early 90's. When I was old enough to truely care, I settled on the Yankees. They were lovable losers at the time (Blue Jays were dominant) and they had all this great history. I loved it, a fallen great fighting to regain it's former status.3. It's lineage. The Yankees have been the biggest team in baseball since... since baseball was baseball. So many many fans have moved away from New York, but passed the tradition on to their children and grand children. Remember that no one retires TO New York city. Why do you think we are so popular in Florida? It's not just us here, the Cubs and Red Sox also have scattered fans in this way. Few people retire to Boston, or to Chicago. They all move out and pass the tradition on to relatives in other parts of the country.4. Foreign players. The Japanese love Godzilla (Seattle has tons of fans because of Ichiro too). Taiwan loves Wang. A-Rod, Jeter, and Posada are hardly European names... We pull the foreign crowds because we have the foreign stars. Simple as that.5. Chicks dig the long ball. People love Home Runs, and over the past decade no team has hit more than them than the Yanees.

i think there are more casual red sox fans than casual yankee fans. It became bandwagon or cliche to like the Red Sox in the late 90s and 2000s (up to 04) because of the curse stuff. If u talk to an average person, they will probably stay they hate the "greedy yankees" and were rooting for the "cursed Sox"Vilma is correct in the travel idea. face it - NYC is the most populous city in the world. Not many old people here tho, because they retire to florida etc. So old yankeefans retire and teach grandkids to like the ynkaees, even if they live in florida or texas or cali.
