Donnie Walsh is not only working on the Knicks' future but he’s also reconnecting with the Knicks' past.

Walsh announced today that the Knicks will honor the best player from each of the past six decades during halftime of the Knicks-Magic game on March 23. Unfortunately, Carl Braun (1940s) is not well enough to attend. But Richie Guerin (1950), Willis Reed (1960), Walt Frazier (1970), Bernard King (1980) and Patrick Ewing (1990) will all be in attendance.

It’s a great idea by Walsh, who says he’s waiting until 2010 before honoring the best player of the past decade. (So don’t count out Jerome James out just yet.) It will be interesting to see which player is chosen; let’s fact it, either Latrell Sprewell or Allan Houston will get the nod.

Allan had a terrific career but Latrell made a bigger impact in the last decade. He was the Knicks top player in 2000 and 2001 when the franchise last made the playoffs. Latrell’s departure was ugly and I’m sure there are people in the organization who would rather name Houston. But Spree has got to be the one.

Plus, you have to factor in Houston is still has strong ties with the organization.

Nonetheless, you can make a more than solid argument for Houston. 2003 was an unbelievable year for him - two 50-point games, career high PPG.
