Spurs hire Becky Hammon as assistant coach

The Spurs are about the only team that could have done that. Popovich will retire there on his terms so he is under no risk if this move backfires.

Good for her, and good on Pop for hiring her for the right reasons.

Maybe she'll take over as head coach when Pops retires.

Love seeing forward progress in society!

You clearly don't pay much attention to this board, do you? If you did, you'd realize society is clearly unraveling.

I'm glad you said this, for I was going to put " Also... In before the sexist comments" But i digressed... but now you gave me a perfect vehicle to say it!

This is great and all, but I doubt she will be a good coach. Absolutely no experience playing or coaching men's basketball on any level.

She's clearly the worst assistant coach in the NBA because reasons.

A few minutes reading any thread here, but especially the OT board, and you'd lose all faith in humanity. Much of it is in jest, but there are plenty of people that are totally serious and speaking their true beliefs.

Like no experience?

You mean like tons of people who get into assistant coaching. I agree it's puzzling that she has no experience playing men's basketball...how do we explain that? But if we widen that to experience playing basketball, she has plenty.

SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCE PLAYING BASKETBALL WHILE HAVING A BONER.

Plus, Pop specifically mentioned that she has already been working with players in an unofficial capacity, and that they have responded well to her.

Backfires?

When has the hiring of an assistant coach ever "backfired", whatever that means.

This past year in New Jersey with Kidd and Frank? In GS this year?

But yeah, generally, I get your overall point.

Men's basketball and women's basketball are different, do you not agree?

Considering the league hands out head coaching jobs like they're candy to former players, I don't have a problem with her lack of experience. Playing in the NBA does not qualify someone to coach. Jason Kidd was/is horrible. I still don't understand why guys like Derek Fisher and Steve Kerr were handed head coaching jobs with zero coaching experience, and I mean zero coaching experience. At least Kerr had front office experience, but that's still completely different from coaching.

The NBA is the absolute worst league when it comes to hiring former players as head coaches without any track record or experience. The NFL doesn't do it. MLB doesn't do it. I have no idea about the NFL or MLS, but I find it unlikely. Just because someone was a point guard does not make them a coach automatically.

I think it's pretty ridiculous that just because she's a woman, people can't question the hire without being called sexist.

I'm kind of confused by your post. You don't care about her lack of experience but then you talk about how bad Kidd, Fisher, etc. are because of their lack of experience. What makes Hammon a better hire, resume wise? Besides the fact that it's for an assistant job.

I know as much about her background as I do any other potential assistant coach hire. It has nothing to do with her being a woman.

In some respects. I don't think they're so different that understanding of the game can't be transferred from one to the other with some effort, of which she has supposedly put in some, having already worked with Popovich and the players.

"Besides the fact that it's for an assistant job." So, you mean, besides the main difference? Assistant positions are specifically for inexperienced but promising (to the person hiring) candidates...the expectation is that they're not finished products but can contribute while continuing to learn about coaching. Head coaches are at the top of the (coaching) hierarchy. That single point that you brushed off completely changes the situation.

Look, when the Blazers moved Kaleb Canales to be our head coach, that was totally different! He had a few years experience filming for our guys first!

Hence why I am VERY picky about what I read in the OT threads.

You can question it, I'm all for that. But to say that "just because she's a woman" being the only reason and the SOLE reason, that is not cool, IMO. If you say "I don't know if she can coach the men's sport because of the differences she learned from the women's basketball" is questioning not her gender, but the differences that really DO lie between the games. I hope that makes sense.

I brought up Kidd/Fisher/Kerr because you said she doesn't have any experience playing mens basketball, and I'm merely saying that guys who played aren't necessarily good coaches. Basketball is basketball, and in my opinion, people with a background in coaching make better coaches than people with a background in playing.

Also, it's a HUGE difference hiring someone as an assistant coach, rather than a head coach. The HC is the big cheese. He makes all the major decisions. Giving someone a HC position without any coaching experience at all is a major mistake. There have been a few successful stories, but overall most head coaches start out as, at least, an assistant or a scout.

If a team hired a male assistant, who had extensive basketball experience but not in the NBA, except as an intern, no one would question the hire.

The Spurs hired a female assistant, who has extensive basketball experience but not in the NBA, except as an intern, but people question the hire.

And insist it has nothing to do with sexism.

Good point.

:MARIS61: Equality is cool. Embrace it ya'll. :)
