PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Steelers lineman Alejandro Villanueva says the national anthem ordeal got out of control and he is taking the blame.

“Unfortunately I threw my teammates under the bus, unintentionally,” Villanueva said. “Every single time I see that picture of me standing by myself I feel embarrassed,” Villanueva said in a press conference Monday.

Villanueva was the only Steelers player standing outside the tunnel for the national anthem before their game Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Villanueva says he asked quarterback Ben Roethlisberger if he could be out in front with the captains during the national anthem and they agreed to it, but when he went to the front of the tunnel to see the flag, he went too far unintentionally.

“When we came out of the locker room into that tunnel, it was a very small area. There was a flag or something coming off the field so there were a bunch of Bears fans, coming off the field holding that going in front of us, so it kind of held us up,” Villanueva said.

The rest of the team remained in the tunnel.

“I made my teammates look bad, and that is my fault, and my fault only,” Villanueva said. “We as a team tried to figure it out, but obviously butchered it.”

During his press conference, the former Army Ranger says he is absolutely okay if teammates kneel or sit during the national anthem.

“People that are taking a knee are not saying anything negative about the military, they’re not saying anything negative about the flag, they’re just trying to protest that there are some injustices in America,” Villanueva said.

This whole thing gets dumber by the second. Anyone who is getting their panties in a wad should be embarrassed.

It is really unfortunate that this guy has to apologize for anything.

Wow. We're almost there. Idiocracy is a prophecy.

He has been eating shit for hours, most of a day now.

Why is the narrative "he's catching flak"?

Why isn't it he really feels like crap for not showing solidarity with his teammates?

Oohhh because it doesn't fit your narrative...

Jeesus...

You really can't see the problem, really?

Guy feels a sense of loyalty to this country and he has to bow to his CO-WORKERS?

I think you're the only one with a narrative. Maybe you can get Rasta to retweet what I'm missing.

First choices are...

Andy Richter
Kumail Nanjiani

I think the biggest problem is people who follow a narrative at all.

I don't have one. Don't even know why one would use the term. I think what I think and it doesn't matter what anyone says unless they actually provide some evidence. Your feelings mean nothing to me.

Yes, they were making the white players bow to the black players in the locker room.

Next they'll make them replace their minivans with cadillacs.

Not the point. How phony is a protest if you make people do it with you?

So, you are saying he's lying about what happened? I don't know whether he is or isn't - but curious how you know.

He said he unintentionally went too far out. He is apparently having to apologize for it.

And your position is that it wasn't unintentional, and he's lying about that?

Nope. Why would I be upset he's catching flak?

Then I don't understand what you were saying when you said:

Where is the bowing to his co-workers? According to him, he wanted to be with them and wasn't because people got in the way.

People are angry aren't they?

People are angry aren't they?

People are always angry. Do you mean his coworkers? Are they angry, and if so, how does that have anything to do with his intentions at the time?

Wasn't mad at Kaepernick when he did what he believes and I'm not mad at this guy.

Lots of comments by the righties calling this guy an anchor baby and crap like that.

Now the world is trying to hammer this dude into submission. Very sad.

Dude made a choice, he should stop acting like a fucking bitch that has to please everyone because of his choice.

I really do hope none of the Blazers feels it's their place to personally become a public distraction from what should be the team's one and only goal, winning the Championship this season.

Do you think players are distracted from the game if they kneel momentarily before the game?

How about after they are eliminated from playoff contention? Ok to take a knee then?

How does one player throw 30 or 40 teammates under the bus?
Must be easy to say, hard to do.

And sell more jerseys than anyone else. Might want to keep this dude.

Selling jerseys is pointless, if you're putting it up against success in the league.

The last three players that sold jerseys for something other than their game, are no longer in the league. Their stories were great, but their success in the league was not.

Colin Kaepernick? Gone.

Michael Sam? Gone.

Devon Still? Gone.

To be fair, Devon Still's jerseys were sold to help support cancer research for kids... which was amazing..... and the Bengals kept him around so he would have insurance for his daughter, but he's no longer in the league. Selling jerseys is great, but it's not the end all, be all.
