suburban retrofitting

I'm not sure how much this applies to the portland/vancouver sprawl, but I thought the idea was interesting.

lots of condos, townhome developments, planned parks, micro-malls instead of mini-malls. wasn't really a retrofitting, it was done over wetlands and industrial areas.....I think the future will be more large condo/community projects where one lives within retail spaces, parks, etc. Instead of having a front yard or back yard, more community facilities, etc. I don't know how this will affect life though.

maybe in Portland it would resemble Pearl district developments or in the suburbs, the area around the streets of tanasbourne.....that has a bunch of redevlopment, its changed a bunch.

Yeah, that is similar but different from what she was talking about. She talked about one place that they built on a wetlands, then when that local economy was dead, they tore it down and made a lake. This lake then became prime property and this then drew economic growth.

I don't know enough about Tanasbourne other than what I read on wiki.

I think the key points I took away from her point was to develop along rail lines, and build more townhouses like you mentioned.

i doubt this trick ever lived in the suburbs. just another Dwell magazine reading douchebag telling the "idiots" how they should live.

Its a different scene out there. was talking with co-workers about suburban life the other day...its a trip. just a bunch of bored kids looking to cause havoc.
