I've never ridden a train before, so it should be fun. Certainly, would have been more scenic to go during the late Spring, but what-the-heck, we wanted to escape town for the long weekend.

I'd like to do the aquarium while we're there. Any other suggestions? (No worries, we'll be catching the Ducks game - somewhere - while there.)

We're heading up the afternoon of the 31st and staying until the 3rd. We'll be staying downtown at the Sixth Street Inn. Looked rather centralized.

Pike Place Market and the surrounding sound area

EMP (and the rest of Seattle Center) if you like music history

Two places worth the time if you're not familiar with Seattle.

I'm down with that. Actually, we'll be within walking distance of both.

Both are well worth it. The Market for the people watching, and EMP for the interactive/Paul Allen-ness of it all.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Trains rock. From side to side. Can't believe you are a train virgin at your age, ABM.

Apparently, I've led a quasi-sheltered live. :sigh:

When I was a tot, I pushed plenty of them. I've never pulled one, though.

On second thought, I did take that Mt. Hood train from Hood River one summer. We were supposed to do that same train - polar express - this Christmas, but couldn't get tickets as it was sold out.

Train is sometimes late. Cell phone coverage is spotty on it at times.

Pike Chowder is the bomb too.Not sure whatelse to doinSeattle downtown except shop...they have aninteresting map store.

Make sure you take the proper train up to Seattle. One is just a people-mover that is less friendly than coach. The other one is alright..I think that's the Starlight Express? It's been a few years but there was a definite difference in trains.

My wife & I found several EXCELLENT restaurants on the bay front with views and great food. I'd suggest looking for dinners down there.

Don't forget to pay your respects.

Eat dinner/have drinks at Wild Ginger at 3rd and Union. Good Asian food and a lovely atmosphere. I'm a huge fan of the lounge (it shares an entrance with The Triple Door).

I've been to EMP several times, and it sucks on weekends IMO. The whole interactive instrument room (one of the coolest parts) is always so crowded you have to wait to play with anything. The Sci-Fi museum is kind of cool if you are into the stuff. It has some cool movie props.

Shop at Westlake Center.

Take a Safeco Field Tour (check the schedule since it's a holiday weekend).

Beth's Cafe for breakfast.

That train's been hijacked to Oklahoma City.

Paging Ed O....

I already sent him a PM about this about a month ago. :)

The Seattle Public Library is a lot of fun... the people I show around the city tend to like it more than EMP. Maybe because (a) it's free, and (b) the EMP has a lot of stuff to read but you can blast through it in like 20 minutes if you don't take care.

Pike Place is a "must go" place. See them throw the fish and check out the shops and the market stalls and the restaurants. It's a good place.

Marrakesh is a fun Moroccan restaurant in Belltown. Via Tribunali is an excellent pizza place with a few locations (Queen Anne and Capitol Hill). Going to the top of the Space Needle isn't cheap, but it's something that I think most people want to do.

That's some of the stuff I'd recommend.

Ed O.

ABM you going alone or with a friend? Perhaps you might meet a cool female on the train?

Tiger Woods, I'm not. Going with my wife.

You dogg, you. ;)

Yes, I do now remember that, Thanks then, thanks now. :)

Yeah, we wanna do the aquarium, Pikes, EMP, and generally putzing around that area around the hotel (Sixth Avenue Inn)....weather permitting, that is. I'm gonna check to see if Via Tribunali is nearby. We won't have a car, but could always hail a cab.

Thanks again, Ed.

EDIT: I see Via Tribunali at The Crocodile on 2nd & Blanchard (Belltown). That looks totally doable.

ABM, try Elliot's Oyster House on Alaskan Way & Seneca (I think) if you're in the mood for some oysters. Instead of a heavy cocktail sauce, they make a cocktail sauce sorbet that just vaporizes in your mouth and lets the taste of the oyster really shine through.

If you want to grab a nice cup of coffee, try Cafe Vivace on Capitol Hill (there are two locations on Broadway). David Schomer really knows his stuff. I also dig Zeitgeist Coffee House near Pioneer Square.

For breakfast, I like 5 Spot on Queen Anne.

If you feel like walking around some nice neighborhoods and parks, Arboretum and Madison Park are both really nice. I also like Magnolia and Fremont.

Anyway, you'll find plenty to do.

OK, thanks a lot, maxie. Now you went and made me have to move these suggestions to a separate document. ;)

Thanks, I'll run these (and the others) past the better half.

BTW, eating oysters is almost orgasmic for me.

Another request:

Any suggestions as to a good relatively roomy sports bar (in that area) to watch the Rose Bowl?

Thanks!

A quick check found this place. Appears to be near the Seattle Center (EMP, Space Needle, etc.) area.

ABM, I say you head to the Belly of the Beast--The U District--in your Emerald & Gold finery. Ask anyone you see wearing Lavender & Puke where you can watch a REAL football team play.

I'm not a shark with razor wit and smooth savvy such as yourself. Therefore, I'd become mincemeat in the hands of the natives. I couldn't let my poor wife would witness the carnage.

don't they have an ESPN Zone in Seattle? Maybe the Taphouse Grill too but its kind of weird being underground and everything.

edit: guess no ESPN Zone

This place looks pretty cool, as well. Appears to be a little more intimate (great pizza reviews!)....down by Pioneer Square.

My thought is, my wife will indulge me in the game, I'll then indulge her (and myself) in the whole Pioneer Square experience.
