Who here who will vote to re-elect President Obama has paid more in taxes than required?
I'm surprised. Not one self-professed Obama voter is willing to be patriotic enough to pay more taxes than they can get away with? C'mon, we're all in this together! I wonder how much our Dear Leader paid in additional taxes?
It's the same argument you hear about hard-line cons that will accept hand-outs from the government because "they are there and it'd be dumb not to take them"
His constituents are already paying for it, why shouldn't he try to recover some of the money he would not have spent?

Out of principle, same way you expect from this thread others to pay more in taxes out of principle.
On the one hand, if you're advocating that government do more, you should be willing to pay more to pay for those increased services. The anology on the other hand would be to pay less and accept less. In this example, you would ask that people pay more and take less. It's not equivalent.
Except I directly, by paying in more than my amount, would not benefit from ALL of the services my tax dollars can or would go to. I wouldn't all of a sudden get to start collecting welfare, or food stamps, or get a grant for school, etc. So the analogy does fit. I get the same and pay more. They get the same and pay more. But, you expect those on the left to be ok with paying more and getting the same, but others might get more, but think it doesn't equal out to the other side. The analogy is the same for those individuals on here you want to pay more. Out of principle, I coudl pay more, to help out those less fortunate by having more money available in the whole pot. So I suppose shame on me for not. Along the same way, out of principle, if you're opposed to that money being available, don't take it when it comes around, because hey, it'd be dumb if you didn't.

But you want more government. It's your choice. You don't have to collect all of it, you simply want others to have more, yet you want everyone else to pay for it. I want less government. I would rather purchase these goods and services myself. If you're going to force me to pay more for things I would prefer to pay for myself, why wouldn't I seek to alternately obtain it through the government, since I've already been forced to pay for it?

We can agree to disagree. I see the analogy as fitting. If you think we should pay more than our share, just because, then I think you shouldn't accep the handouts that might be available to you if you are so opposed to them. Set a standard that you'd rather pay for what you want than take it as a handout. And if you did, and everyone like you did, maybe the government would realize they don't have to hand it out to as many people. Whatever"IT" maybe be in that situation. If you're willing to pay for it, but take it because, again as 3RA1N1AC said, "you'd be dumb not to", then the govt. can easily see it as more people dependent on it, and thus needing to provide even more. Take a stand for what you believe in, but no, you won't. You just take what's handed out to you,a nd can't actually stand up for what you think is right. But you're more than happy to feel smug calling out others for the exact same shit.
It just blows my mind that those that say they want the government to do less are still willing to take handouts from the government because they're offered.

I'm not building a strawman, I was replying directly to maxie who said if he was being forced to pay, he was going to take it from the government, and why shouldn't he. No strawman there at all. If he is opposed to it, don't take it.

Great. I'm going to force you to buy a new car. Now don't use it. Would you abide by that condition?
All I'm saying is if you want others to purchase a new car for you to use, you should chip in a little more.
Ultimately, you're probably taking someone else's position, and labeling it to me for speaking up in this thread. I don't want free stuff I haven't paid for. Same as you, I'm happy to take stuff I have paid for. It pisses me off when people who don't need it or don't really earn it get unemployment. When money is wasted all over the place. I'm sure if most of the money being handed out didn't go through 75 organizations with no solid record keeping, they might be able to make it work a little better. So lottery winners weren't still sitting on unemployment and what not. I'm not looking for more for myself. I'm happy with what I pay for, and what I receive. I think there's areas we can do more, and areas we don't need to do as much. I don't want the government controlling all aspects of my life, same as you. So you can continue to make assumptions of what I want, and what the crux of our difference is. But I think it;s bullshit that you want one side to stand up for their principles, but you aren't willing to do the same. And actually demand a link from 3RA1N1AC for saying exactly what you're saying. Why ask for a link as if you didn't believe it was true when it's your position? If you don't think something's right, then don't participate. If I didn't want my tax dollars for some reason going to, I dunno, public schools, I wouldn't send my kid to a public school just because hey, it's free, why not?
