OMFG Fuck the Ducks... Suspending a player for a snowball fight! Seriously?! That will go well with recruiting. =( Damn, kids try to have some fun and that is what they get. Seriously, fire Helfrich, I can't fathom why he would ever get involved in an issue with a SNOWBALL FIGHT.

They deserve the beating they will get from Texas. Idiots.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume (for your sake I hope) that you didnt see the video of what happened?

How about you watch the video before you freak out.

Brown was involved with impeding traffic, hitting a "non player" (there is actually statute written in for this regarding sporting events) with a snow ball in the face and throwing a tub full of snow into a professors car.

Senseless actions like that do not meet the behavior standards of a student/athlete on scholarship and he is lucky there isn't further discipline, including the professor pressing charges.

I am no Helf homer, but support him with this decision.

I did watch the video. Lot of kids having a snowball fight... and if you think I am overreacting? He did not dump a full tub of snow in his car! He tossed some snow on the guy as he was getting out. Damn I mean seriously. Did it get a little out of hand? Maybe... but seriously... that is the most lame suspension I have ever heard of.

Okay, so if you're driving along and a bunch of kids block the road, won't get out of your way, dump snow on your windshield so you can't see, and then pelt you with snowballs when you get out of the car, you'd be cool with that?

And don't forget, dumps/throws a tub full of snow into your car. Water on dashboards, electric windows and locks can damage connections. This wasn't some toilet-paper prank...this mob of folks impeded progress and physically struck authority figures in the face with snow and ice.

He is so lucky the victims aren't pressing charges.

The guy is what - 19 or 20?

Isn't there some middle ground between "ignore it" and "string him up!" ??? Even the driver involved said criminal charges weren't warranted.

If I am on a college campus like that... not just driving down a random neighborhood... yeah... I get out and throw some snowballs back... laugh about it, tell them they shouldn't target cars or people not in the fight and drive away with a smile on my face.

I have kids... the eldest is 15, and when he gets exited about stuff and is playing... he sometimes does dumb ass things like that. You can either beat them up about it, or realize that yeah they made a mistake, but their intention wasn't evil. Once when my son was about 6 we were throwing pine cones back and forth in a park, when I get hit in the forehead with a big ass rock so hard I saw stars. Prolly explains some of my posts. But the bottom line was he didn't mean anything by it... he was playing, reached down and couldn't find a pine cone and there was a rock...

I don't think Brown had any bad intentions, and not only that but the actual outcome of the mistake was absolutely no damage, no harm to anyone. Sure if you do something stupid and it causes harm or damage you pay the piper, but this was just a case of an over exited kid playing with snow.

I still think Helfrich over reacted. Big time. If you suspended every player for something like that you don't have a team.

Perfect example! Your son hit YOU, the known player and someone who was there to play. He didn't stop a stranger, impede them, then hit them, knowing full well he was doing something wrong.

Brown is a representative of the University. He has signed a Code of Conduct Agreement. He has agreed to represent the University in a respectful way.

Don't make excuses for poor behavior. It's one game. Also, we have no idea if Brown took an attitude with Mark upon being addressed about the issue.

There wasn't any damage because the guy was a former professor and chose not to press charges. Maybe you didn't know this, but blocking a road is actually against the law. The people in the video are lucky that no charges were pressed and they can move forward with only a one-game suspension.

There have to be consequences for your actions. He isn't getting a criminal record, so I really don't think sitting out one game is that big of a deal. He, and others, reflected very poorly on the school and the football team. They need to be shown that they need to think before they act.

The old dude shouldn't have been driving in that snow anyways. They were doing a public service by stopping him.

And some of you sound like grumpy old men on this.

Remember what Charlton Heston said, "From my cold dead hands!" Put the emphasis on cold and you'll know what we're really talking about here. First you'll want to take away snow balls and then you'll come for the guns.

but blocking a road is actually against the law. .

And so is jaywalking, and driving 1 mph over the speed limit, and pumping your own gas (GASP), and whispering dirty things in your lovers ear during sex (true law in Oregon)

Was anyone charged with a crime actually? No, of course not... so don't bring up the against the law shit... it isn't relevant.

Now excuse me while I go break one of those laws. Sue me.

You're going to whisper dirty things while pumping gas?

as usual the only acceptable answer for the perpetually outraged is their view. I watched the video and thought they were kids being stupid, which is part of growing up. Now one of the guys is being punished for this silliness being caught on video, which is also a part of growing up as a player in this PR age. I know that back in my HS & UO days I participated in stuff dumber then this and while in Eugene I saw football players do stuff that makes this look like public service. The Professor went so far as to say back in the day he'd probably have participated too. It's not the team's proudest moment, but hopefully one that individuals learn from.

I think the suspension was uncalled for. Discipline? YES! Bowl game suspension- NO!

Geez be SEC about this!!!! Suspend him against South Dakota next year, not during a bowl!!

You are really missing the point here. We have misdemeanor crimes being committed - harassment and disorderly conduct. This isn't about driving one mile per hour over the speed limit. It is more like driving after drinking, knowing it is wrong, bumping into someones car - although not causing damage, then blowing a 0.08.

Get it, yet? In Oregon you don't need someone to "press charges" if there is clear evidence of crime. The Eugene PD could still cite those involved.

"There were probably 100 to 200 students, a select few leading the charge. They stopped my vehicle, pelted it with snowballs packed pretty hard like iceballs," Mayfair told KATU News on Sunday.

"It sounded like a rock hitting the windshield driving down the freeway," she said.

Mayfair described a group of people trying to dump a bucket of snow into her car when she rolled down the window.

This would set a bad precedent imo. This would go beyond whether or not the suspension is deserved. It would teach players that you can do stupid stuff and as long as its an important game, you'll get to play.

Also it completely goes against the WTD ethos, of "Faceless Opponents"

Gee - instead of a suspension (that hurts his team-mates) why not punish *him*?

Make him spend christmas break doing community service at a foodbank or homeless shelter. If you believe he harmed the community, then make him carry out an act of restitution.

Put it this way - what punishment should the other students involved face?

Wait what?!? When were snow ball fights criminalized?

Snowball fights are often banned on campuses and in parks. I am not aware that they are banned at Oregon.

But, either is playing tackle football. But, can someone who is playing tackle football stop a passing motorist and when they get out of the vehicle, tackle them?

No.

Why?

They are not a voluntary participant.

Voluntary participation is written into statutes and part of case law. If that were your mom or dad, I would expect your reaction to be a bit different -- no?

What is criminal is harassment...a Class B Misdemeanor.

Harassment

(1) A person commits the crime of harassment if the person intentionally:

(a) Harasses or annoys another person by:

(A) Subjecting such other person to offensive physical contact; or

(B) Publicly insulting such other person by abusive words or gestures in a manner intended and likely to provoke a violent response;

And physically blocking the street is illegal as well.
