Workers at an Arizona cryonics facility mutilated the frozen head of baseball legend Ted Williams - even using it for a bizarre batting practice, a new tell-all book claims. In "Frozen," Larry Johnson, a former exec at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Ariz., graphically describes how The Splendid Splinter" was beheaded, his head frozen and repeatedly abused. The book, out Tuesday from Vanguard Press, tells how Williams' corpse became "Alcorian A-1949" at the facility, where bodies are kept suspended in liquid nitrogen in case future generations learn how to revive them. Johnson writes that in July 2002, shortly after the Red Sox slugger died at age 83, technicians with no medical certification gleefully photographed and used crude equipment to decapitate the majors' last .400 hitter.

I'm curious, was the beheading because of protocol or because they needed something to bat around?

Because I usually think that they freeze the entire body, although I suppose that all would be necessary would really be the brain, they probably wouldn't want their 83 year old body anyway. They'd want a new one.

Personally I doubt they'll get it to work, but maybe in the future, Frye will be delivering things around the galaxy.

to some cultures, death is just a part of life, and the body an empty vessel. ritualistic cannabalism and the like.

doctors "mutilate" corpses everyday, harvesting for transplants, often at the detriment of the patients life span. and we trust our loved ones with them.

but the irony of ted williams son alienating his entire family to put him there in the first place.....a little funny.

I don't have any sympathy for the family that put him in there. I remember the huge legal battle with his son over even allowing him to be cryogenically frozen. It was a big story at the time. Parts of his family wanted desperately to keep him out of there, but they lost the battle. I have deep sorrow and sympathy for them, but his son is a piece of shit.

No joke, I almost named my son Theordore Williams. Now, I have relatives named Theodore and Williams is a family name, but The Splendid Splinter is my favorite ballplayer of all time. When I think of the tabloid train wreck his death became, I shake my head in sadness. This information, however, makes my blood boil. Those people are maggots.
