I did college stats, too. Reading that Van Exel part, I can't help thinking about Blake's 14-assist quarter. I was cheering along with everyone, but after every basket I'd look up at the in-game stats board and go "they gave him that? Really?".

That was the first thing that came to my mind as well.
 
And people have doubts that the NBA is partially rigged?
 
I would love to say stats don't mean anything... but people do love to crunch numbers. I knew assists where crazy... sometimes I see a PG get what I thought was 5-6 assists and see one or none in the boxscore for a road game. Oh well.

Can you bet on points or assists or stuff like that?

Of course you can. I wonder if this article will be acknowledged in any way by the league.
 
I don't know why he blacked out his name, like it would be so hard to figure out who he is.
 
Shit, Stockton's assist numbers at home were crazy. He got the benefit of the doubt for years.
 
I doesn't really change the outcome of the games... but it could increase or decrease the value of a player ever so slightly. Maybe. If you can bet on them you can bet there are scorekeepers getting calls from Vegas.
 
No wonder Shareef sucked! We had elevated expectations because of stat stuffing!
 
Makes me question Oden's excellent rebounding statistics a bit... He averaged one offensive rebound more at home than he did on the road.

That could be attributed to more fouls on the road.

Whatever the numbers might be (fudged a little one way or another) my eyes tell me everything I need to know about Greg -- he IS and elite rebounder on a per minute or per possession basis.

unfortunately, neither Hollinger nor 82games.com have advanced rebounding stats split into home/away. 61 games probably isn't a large enough sample to draw any meaningful conclusions from, but it might be something to look out for this season.

For what it's worth, during 08-09, LMA also had a full offensive rebound more at home than he did on the road. That wasn't the case though for his first two years. Prz's rebound and blocking stats are very consistent home/away over the last few years.

So, Oden averaged ever so slightly less fouls per minute at home, but probably not enough to explain the extra rebound per game.

Of course, a big part of it (for all players, not just Oden) could be psychological. They know they can play more aggressive at home, as most officials not named Steve Javie are likely to give the home team a more favorable whistle.
