The curious case of Caleb Swanigan

He didn't look very good in the first 5 games in summer league but last 2 he played well. He hasn't look good this preseason due to he is slow on defense. Plus his decision on passing been very irritating to me. Right Leonard is ahead if him to play along Zach.

Well, the Blazers just picked up the 3rd year option on both Swanigan and Collins so there is no chance Biggie gets cut.

Olshey locks his brain into a plan and just can't change it. A year ago, he planned to dump Ed after a year of Zach. The former had a better season than expected, and the 10th pick had a worse one than expected. But Olshey just can't change his plan once his mind is tracked into it. For the same reason, all his 2nd round picks are finally given minutes in their 3rd years. He is so predictable.

Olshey speaks of plans, but whether he actually has one is debateable. Or maybe he’s just not good at following through on those plans...

doubling down on an error....
Neil Olshey ladies and gentlemen.
I respectfully disagree. Not picking up the 3rd year option is a mistake in my mind unless it is a complete failure of a player. You don't give up bird rights on a player before that player has even played a game in his 2nd season, especially for a young big man. If Swanigan can show any glimmer of hope then he maintains some possible trade value.

How did Zach have a worse than expected year? He wasn't even supposed to play last year and was thought of as a longer term project from the moment he was drafted.

Lol, you could be right, but its so much easier for me to dish it on NO because.... reasons.

Oh and besides just the messing around part, I really do believe he has a habit of doubling down on mistakes. I think we all know who Exhibit A is...

Yes, he re-signed Meyers. However I don't think picking up a cheap option on a rookie contract is anywhere close to the same thing or doubling down.

It annoys me that the last two years weve drafted guys who, “arent even suppose to play”.
So we cant criticize them or NO for a couple years? Dame /CJ’s prime is spent with a bunch of guys not even close to ready to contribute? I think Zach and Simons might be ok sometime but it really bugs me...

The world has become completely impatient. In both cases he claims he tried to trade the picks for veteran players but it didn't work out. People complain that he plays it safe and doesn't take chances and then also get mad that he takes projects? You can't have it both ways.

I dont think he took risks with either of those picks. Zach and Simons were so far from being ready that if neither make it, well 2-3 years from now we will all have moved on. Whats the risk exactly? He had to pick somebody.

Its not impatience for me, I just think he’s done a bad job of putting guys around dame and CJ that can help them win. Yeah the Nurkic signing and contract was great! No complaints there. Whats funny to me is the more I watch Zach the more I think if he’s ever a good NBA player itll be about the time they have to decide to pay him or not.

I can’t believe I’m saying this because I’m on team cut biggie but this would make trading him easier, as long as some other team values him. Even if they don’t, he’d turn into an expiring, which has value in itself.

Ok idk what’s happened but Biggie has been....not bad? Hodor and Freeman also mentioned on their podcast that he has a much better attitude than last time he was here. He’s averaging over 14 rebounds and 3 assists/36, but beyond that his contested percentage has also taken a spike the last couple of games. If he ever gets back into the shape he was in that first summer league, he could actually carve out a role in the league. Can’t believe I’m saying that, but maybe he’s grown up.
