The Difference between Iowa and New Orleans

What's the difference between Iowa (the heartland of America) and New Orleans?

New Orleans knew that a hurricane was coming and chose to do little, then expected the government and the taxpayers to rebuild the city and their homes better than they were prior to the hurricane.

Iowa just watched it rain and dealt with it.

Where are the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods? Where is good old Michael Moore?

Why is the media NOT asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved this problem? ...Asking where the FEMA trucks and trailers and food services are?

Why isn't the Federal government moving Iowa people into free hotels in Chicago and Minneapolis?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ?

Where are Sean Penn, Bono, and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes, cases of beer and television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa .... because that's what God wants?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of shootings at rescuers, of rapes and murder?

Where are all the people screaming that George Bush hates white, rural people? My God, where are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Oprah, and Ray Coniff Jr?

How come in another two weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again? Where are the government bailout vouchers? The government debit cards?

There must be one hell of a big difference between the value of the people of Iowa and value of the people of Louisiana

No doubt exists whether this flood has been catastrophic, has changed lives, has altered our view of the world. I was there with you all. I sandbagged, worried, evacuated my own newsroom by hand in the pitch black when electricity was cut. I cried as I read stories from our newspaper and others. I prayed for those affected. I'm still waiting for the water to recede, and I hope just as much that the damage is minimal.

Meanwhile, for those of you who weren't there, I'd like to tell you a little about Katrina:

When Katrina ravaged my Mississippi as well as Louisiana, I watched on the DI television, and I was helpless. My mother relayed to me via the telephone which coworker had lost a husband and baby, who had drowned in their attics as they tried to break through the roof to escape rising waters.

I watched the death toll rise, the government not send aid for days.

People were angry; they were forgotten. They died. And even after they died, they were still forgotten. One news story recounts a woman who tried to flag down police as she stood next to the corpse of her husband. Their advice to her was how to effectively move the smelly body as far away from the road as possible.

what it comes down to is Iowa is probably hard-working, self-reliant and they can work to save themselves.

new orleans is a collection of uneducated trash, criminals, and people that need to be saved.

The people in Iowa worked together to handle the crisis. The people in New Orleans ignored the warnings, refused to leave their homes, and then howled that it was all the government's fault.

The fact is, New Orleans is a pathetic mess of a place where people have very little initiative or common sense, and are wholly dependant on the local and federal government to save their butts in every area of life.

You won't hear it from the New York Times, but it's true nevertheless.

Sure, you could choose to take from this thread that it's about Liberal vs. Conservative, Urban vs. Rural or even Black vs. White. I choose to look at it as people who first look to help themselves vs. people who first look for others to help them.

The bottom line is that both are about community. When you find yourself in a pickle, take care of your own family and then take care of others who can't take care of themselves.

I find it very interesting that no one has refuted the obvious differences between the way these two floods were handled, which is the whole point of this thread. Instead, they are choosing to scream, "racism!" It shows how weak their position really is.
