In a beautiful display of running rugby, the Hurricanes opened the scoring through Karl Lowe before the Highlanders hit back when captain Jimmy Cowan finished off some neat backline work.

The frenetic pace continued until half-time with both teams securing a bonus-point for scoring four tries but it was the Hurricanes holding a slim 26-24 advantage at the break.
