An Egyptian who was once a Special Forces officer has been chosen "caretaker" leader of al Qaeda in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death, according to a source with detailed knowledge of the group's inner workings.
Al Qaeda's interim leader is Saif al-Adel, who has long played a prominent role in the group, according to Noman Benotman. Benotman has known the al Qaeda leadership for more than two decades. He was once a leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a militant organization that used to be aligned with al Qaeda, but in recent years renounced al Qaeda's ideology.

Made public by whom? Can we stop everyone from talking about AQ? It isn't necessarily our government leaking this.

And if it is our government, it's obviously a lie, since our government never tells the truth. So you are still in the dark.

Actually, I think it would make sense for us to leak that someone who isn't actually in charge is in charge, to cause greater confusion among the rank and file.

Good for Panetta, but shouldn't one of the employment qualifications for the CIA is your ability to keep your mouth shut? The one that really bothered me, btw, was the leaking about what we took from the compound. It helps me less to know that we took hard drives from the compound than if we would have said we left immediately after killing Bin Laden and took abuse from people complaining we didn't stick around to gather intelligence.

The intelligence community has always lived by the idea that their successes are private and their failures are public. Political grandstanding should have no place in this community.
