What I am getting from this is you can only have two big contracts, and that Portland should hope Sharpe and Scoot earn them from Portland. Dame's contract could soon become a boat anchor, especially if it were paired with a LaVine, Leonard, etc... You want your big contracts going to stars in their 5-9 year range. Older vets could be facing challenges due to this. It all seems very odd. Teams that draft well should get an exemption, say if they don't have a huge free agent contract on the books. I would hate for Portland to have another great draft next year, hit on it, but then lose a homegrown all star because of this CBA. Just thinking out loud.
Yeah if Sharpe and Scoot become max players do the Blazers even want to hit on acquiring a 3rd allstar in the draft? 3 max contracts starts to get very difficult to build with.
This CBA has a lot of consequences we don't fully understand. It may change a lot of the prior best team building strategies. Even outside this dynamic we've seen a shift with less dominant teams and much more parity in the league, which I really like.
I always liked the idea of Dirk/Wade/Kobe etc having a contract that only counts half against the cap. Maybe if you've been a 5x allstar, over the age of 34 and have been with the same team over 10 years. Those guys seems like they should still all get paid but their teams shouldn't be forced to dump them to improve the cap. Obviously that would be a Lillard situation if he were to stay here.
