In what is being described as an incident of racism, a school district in Texas has filed a complaint after some rival high school students chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A!" to celebrate a basketball victory. And some of the students involved have now been punished and forced to apologize.

Student supporters at Alamo Heights High School started the celebratory chant after their team clinched a regional championship against San Antonio Edison High School on Saturday, the San Antonio News-Express reported.

Edison High School is predominantly Hispanic, and officials at the San Antonio Independent School District took the chant as a racial insult from supporters of the largely white Alamo Heights team.

"Our kids try real hard and work extra hard to get to the regional tournament, and then we have to worry about them being subjected to this kind of insensitivity," Garza told San Antonio's KENS-TV. "To be attacked about your ethnicity and being made to feel that you don't belong in this country is terrible. Why can't people just applaud our kids? It just gets old and I'm sick of it. Once again, we're on pins and needles wondering what's going to happen."

why would they chant usa? makes no sense, its not as if they beat a team comprised of non us citizens

wait, white people won a basketball contest? this is bigger news than i thought!

these kind of shit talking with fans was pretty fun back in HS. going to jesuit, we were pretty bad with some of the "inner city schools" like Wilson (lol).

yes i bet you made fun of all their giant cocks

I hope these were native americans chanting, not white descendants of immigrants chanting to hispanic descendants of immigrants.

yes, native americans have every right to be more than proud of this great country, let their ancient mystical chants ring out! usa! usa!

Anyone born in America is a Native American.

ALL American "Indians" are descendants of immigrants, just like you or me.

Seems like a free speech issue addressing illegal aliens on the public dole.

I sent this to your reporter who reported about Alamo Heights being “racist”

Hello,

I am a current student at Alamo Heights, and I would like to discuss the story on how Alamo Heights chanting “USA” is racist. If you haven’t already checked your video comments on the KSAT12 page, most comments, if not mainly, said that this is not racist at all. Yes, our school consists of mainly of whites, but… that does not make us racist. What is wrong with being proud of our country? We have shouted it out at other games against WHITE teams and at pep rallies, and it is in not being racist towards anyone. I am white and my best friend happens to be a Hispanic. We are all Americans are we not? We should not be calling the whole community of Alamo Heights racist, when it was only three students starting the chant, and one of them being Hispanic. You also forgot to explain in your news story that Edison chanted Alamo Whites. It seems odd that you only told half of the story of what actually happened. Edison also made a rude remark about one of our paralyzed students, Eddie Moreno, calling him “retarded.” We are not the only ones guilty in the matter of racism. I think you need to air another story showing the other half of the story. It would be much appreciated by the Alamo Heights community and school system.

Sincerely,
Sage Novosad-Talley

I'm sure we can trust that Edison's coach will make these racist students of his apologize and he will suspend them from further competition just like alamo Heights did.

out of curiosity, what was your teams record against Wilson? Was this during Damon Stoudamires time there, or post Damon?

I know HCP has said he went to Grant, it would be neat to see if they had any unique chants going back in the day.

"I'm blind, I'm deaf, I'd make the perfect ref!"

and

"We fight, we fight, I just fucked HCP's wife!" were among my favorites

basketball team sucked bad when I was there. post-damon and pre-Dunleavy years.

basically all of our chants centered around us having more money and chanting about various criminal acts whenever black guys would shoot free throws. :MARIS61:

that was any PIL schools. Any other team in the metro league the cheers were either about them being farmers (Aloha, Hillsboro and Glencoe) or how they were going to be shining our shoes some day or pumping gas.

Then we got all the "Jesbian" and homosexual chants directed towards us.
