The PER argument.......

I think Batum should start at SG. A few reasons.

1.) that will light a fire under Matthews ass. Hopefully Matthews took up the challenge to get his starting job back.

2.) being SG gives you the best opportunity to help defend. That's something Batum has really mastered IMO.

3.) so far he has been our only consistent shooter. Shooting guard = shooter.

I love Matthews but lets be real here. The dude has been playing like shit this season. Something needs to happen or we will lose Batum. Yeah I know he's restricted. I mean more mentally.

I will repeat that starting Ray-Wes-Wallace-Camby is simply an awful outside shooting lineup and frankly those guys aren't all that good at taking it inside either, IMO this just reinforces to me just how good LMA is playing given how poorly his teamates are shooting!

So Nate has been willing to play Nic at the 2 for spot or limited minutes so that makes me really wish someone could ask Nate, "So Nate, if you are willing to play him there in limited minutes what do you feel you would lose by playing him there extensively???? What would be the drawbacks or concerns? Wait wait Nate, let me get my pen and pad ready for all these insightful reasons. Annnnnnddddddd .... go ..."

I place no value in it at all for the most part. It's like the +/- stat. It's meaningless.

So it is by pure chance that Lebron, CP3, Kobe, Wade, Durant, Rose, Howard and Aldridge are in the top 10 in the league in PER? Do you not consider all of those players top 20 players in the league? If you consider those players near the top of the league, it seems pretty obvious that PER isn't "meaningless".

You and I have had debates over the internals surrounding PER, and what impacts it, but I think we both agree that in terms of assessing play over a variety of factors, PER is clearly the best measure of a player in terms of offensive efficiency compared to other players.

Word.

It's not the be-all, end-all, but... it's definitely a valuable piece of the puzzle in looking at players.

Yes.

It isn't perfect, and doesn't incorporate every aspect of the game. But is a reasonable tool for grouping and roughly comparing players.

Stats are meaningless.

All you really need is my opinion.

Tonight's game had to move him up! Very efficient!

Jeremy Lin is 7th in the league in PER. Also, Aldridge is 10th but only barely behind Dwight Howard at 9th.

Shame Lin didn't get his chance a few weeks ago. He would've been voted in by the fans to the All Star team.

Batum passed up Iguodala last night. Batum now has PER of 19.2 and rising.

A PER of 20 is generally considered all-star level. Not bad for a guy who has started 2 games and averages 26.6 MPG.

Maybe if he'd been starting all year and playing 36 MPG we might have two all-stars - and a better record.

I agree 100%. I've been advocating more minutes for Batum all year.

Man, it's good to read all this about Batum.

Too lazy to look it up and who said what, but just a short time ago there was a thread about Batum being a medicore role player only worth the MLE and should not be offered anymore than that. Remember reading how average he was and not wanting to get into it at that time.

Board is finally coming around when it comes to Batum :D

I've always been a big Batum fan and he's been my youngest daughter's favorite player since the first time she saw him play as a 19-year old in a preseason game against Utah. He had 12 points and 3 very impressive blocks (two against Kirilenko). She still has the custom made extra small Batum 88 black jersey I bought her at the beginning of his rookie season, She wears it to every Blazers game. She finally got to meet him last year and was so happy she was in tears. He was very nice, gave her a hug and said, "no cry, no cry".

I was Batum's biggest detractor in his rookie season, I saw nothing special about him. But he's improved so much since then it's so hard not to like him.

Well, hard for everyone except Nate.

The Bulls have 7 guys with a PER over 15, 5 guys with a PER over 17, 3 guys with a per over 19, and two over 20 (Rose, Boozer). Best record in the NBA.

The Blazers have 5 guys with PER over 15, 2 with PER over 17 (both over 19) and one over 20. 16-14 record.

I think PER says a lot, even for not the top players in the league.

Nic is now at 19.35 and tied for 5th with Pierce. Gerald climbs to 15th at 16.32.

The HCP would lead the S2 forum in PER rankings followed closely by BeerBoy!

Not bad! Imagine that, he gets some minutes and produces like we thought. Some of us at least,
