This is the second summer in a row that a franchise guy ditched their small market team for a big market:

2015: LaMarcus Aldridge (similar market I know, but he left and Portland got nothing but capspace)
2016: Kevin Durant
2017: Gordon Hayward

They all happened on July 4th - announced on the Players Tribune. There's nothing cities like Portland/Salt Lake/etc can do as long as the CBA stays as constructed. These three players in their prime left winning teams.

I would honestly the team did away with divisions overall. It's fucking stupid now. Just have the top teams in East/West play each other in best of seven elimination style competitions. Also, I'd think about a priemier/championship style tier platform. Works wonders is soccer so no reason it can't work here.

Lamarcus was never, and should never be considered a franchise player. We had Roy and then Lillard.

Less about population, more about financials. Portland just doesn't have enough power in the business market to be a large market.

Unless you have somebody like Pop or Lebron in your corner, small market teams are always going to have it rough. It sure is a good thing we maxed out Dame. He might hold that against us. It's obvious that would have helped Utah if they had offered him early.

I don't really think market size matters as much as it used to. Today it's more about destinations.
