dundon would seem to care more about which guy ‘he’ would want at coach, vs. joe. the fact that he’s interviewing some candidates without cronin in the mix…

i understand the urgency to get a coach in place sooner before more openings come up.

but it is interesting absolutely no news is out about potentially replacing cronin. you would think a GM hire would come first so then that person would hire his guy as coach.

does this mean cronin wont be replaced?
Yes, otherwise, as you stated, they'd hire the GM first. You could tell from the interviews with Dundon and Cronin since he bought the team, Cronin speaks like his job is safe*

* for now. They could get replaced anytime

all this said, this seemingly extensive search is quite the contrast to the last time there was an opening.

i believe only chauncey, kidd, and becky hammon got interviewed with billups being a leading candidate the entire way.

How does Dundon have a relationship with Jason Kidd? How deep is this relationship?
Dundon grew up in the Dallas area. His businesses are based in Dallas. He started a golf club in Dallas.

how do you know he's doing that? that's fcuked up. I'm talking about not coordinating with the GM interviewing coaches

“Portland's search has been multilayered to date and thus challenging even for NBA coaching insiders to track, given that some candidates have spoken primarily to Blazers general manager Joe Cronin, while others have spoken directly to new Blazers owner Tom Duncan and some have spoken to both.”

I suppose you can decide whether or not you believe this.

They’re having a contest; the guy who lures in the coach Dame likes best gets to own the team.

I have a feeling that if we hire JVG or Kidd that they'll be equal with Joe on the basketball ops side of the workflow chart.

If it's a guy like Dahntay Jones who is younger than Dame, I'd imagine that Joe will be seen as the boss. I do like the idea of us getting the basketball equivalent to Sean McVay.

What makes you think Cronin isn’t in the mix?

Kind of sounds like he is very much in the mix.

if it were me, I would have my GM and his staff run all the interviews and vet people and when it got to the final round, I would meet the candidates and be part of the decision with the GM’s endorsement.

based on the reporting here and from earlier, If you choose to believe the reporting, there are instances where Tom is interviewing candidates separately from Cronin before he’s engaged them.

Did they really spell his last name wrong?

Anyway, it is possible that Tom talked to some of them directly on his own, and they then talked to Joe. Regardless, I doubt there will be just one interview for the candidate they want to offer.

Paul Allen used to get involved when he was owner. Certainly Bert Kolde.
I would expect a brand new owner to want to have a say in the matter.

I think your take makes sense.

If it were me and I believed Joe was the right guy to be running the basketball ops, I would only get in depth with a guy like JVG or I guess Kidd, who I might want to put in a position as head coach that was equal to Joe.

Then with guys that I thought would be subordinate do Joe, I wouldn't really care when I talked with them, I'd not get to deep with them and just want to make sure they are someone I like and let Joe do the in depth stuff.

I have no idea if that's how Dundon is doing it and if that's why his involvement is seemingly so random.

As an adult Dundon has based his business and life around the Dallas area but he didn't grow up there. He grew up in Houston.

IIRC, he attended Southern Methodist University, which is in Dallas.

EDIT: Did a double check. He and his mother moved to the Dallas suburb of Plano when he was 15 after living two years in Houston, then he went to SMU. Before that, he lived in New Jersey.

So he's either moving the team to Raleigh, Plano, Houston, or New Jersey.

In his interview he talked about how Charleston media was terrified he'd move the hockey team to Houston due to his growing up there. Didn't know about Jersey but he definitely identifies as "Texan"

He's been there since he was 13.

I suspect they focused on Houston rather than Dallas more because Dallas already has an NHL team. According to multiple articles, he spent much more time in Dallas than Houston, but he was in Houston first. Either way, he's a Texan.

Maybe he'll move the Blazers to El Paso or Amarillo. Those both have an old west trail blazery vibe.

I don’t think anyone is arguing against that take, certainly not me.

It just seems like some are feeling like there is a departure from the GM picking the coach.
If I owned the team I would be pretty hands on. I'd want some say in the matter and I'd probably be just as involved as Dundon is.
I'd also be judging the current GM by what he does in this search.

That’s fine. There are some extreme examples of new owners to try to accomplish all of their goals in the opening days with the team and overpay for players or give up too much in a trade (there is even the idea of other GMs anticipating this and using it as leverage), or step on the responsibilities and expertise of their GM. Or bring aboard buddies vs the most qualified people.

I can understand someone wanting to paint their new boat and christen it and get a new crew on deck. That makes sense. but he should stay in the owner’s quarters and let the pilot do their thing instead of trying to take the wheel himself.
