well, doesn't the military generally typically recruit from a lower socio-economic background or people who don't have that many options to find civilian jobs in the first place?

As usual, the American media covers up bad war news more than the British press. This says that many Scout Snipers in many other units carve the Nazi-style SS into their rifle butts. So Nazi symbols are more widespread than the AP article lets on.

A second picture, reportedly taken before 2004, showed a marine sniper with an SS symbol carved into the side of the his rifle.

A spokeswoman said the icon had been used by the troops to identify themselves as scout snipers, a designation unique to the Marine Corps, and was never intended to have Nazi connotations.

Most Marines are educated in public schools and don't go to college. I doubt any of them knew what that symbol meant.

They say they thought it was cool and used it as a "Sniper Squad" flag. My girls are in first and third grade, and they have learned about Rosa Parks, but not WII and the Nazis, thus far in their public school classes.

A second photo from a single rifle in 2004 means it is "widespread". Who is to say that the sniper from 2004 wasn't a part of the 2010 unit?
