Despite scenes that dwell at excessive length on humans slashing zombie skulls, zombies gorging on human viscera and a soundtrack drenched with the disgustingly moist sounds accompanying such activities, "The Walking Dead" begins Season 4 in depressingly bloodless fashion.

Maybe it's because the real action has been taking place behind the scenes. For a series that has been a standout success for AMC – attracting ratings and demographic riches such higher-toned brethren as "Mad Men" can only dream of – "The Walking Dead" has been subject to an alarming amount of behind-the-scenes drama.

Adapted from a comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, "The Walking Dead" has been a ratings success since its debut in 2010. While viewership has grown steadily – it ended Season 3 as the number-one show for adults 18-49, the first original cable series to earn that coveted status – "The Walking Dead" has proven a dangerous place to be a showrunner.
