This is a genuine question, not some trap trying to get views about, say, Obamacare. I am legitimately interested in what you believe and how you acquired that belief. It is a question for people who believe
(a) they have a soul and
(b) it is that that will survive their bodily death and live on in some afterlife (heaven or hell)

So, here's the question:
When was your soul created, and how?
Options:
Apparently there's a view called "traducianism" whereby the soul is created by the parents by the joining of sperm and egg. Alternatively there's the "creationist" view whereby the parents take care of making the embryo but God directly creates the soul at the same moment and joins it to the embryo.

Both these views deny that the soul pre-exists the body. Alternative views suggest that souls do exist, perhaps eternally (perhaps God created them all at once and sends them down from heaven to earth in turn. The question then is, are they conscious before then? Do they regret being sent to earth? Could we recover memories of our soul's pre-existence?)

If, on the other hand, you believe in souls but haven't thought about these issues, I'd be interested to hear that too.

It's definitely more interesting for me to conceive of having an eternal soul....whether that's an individual energy or a collective, I have no idea...I have read about reincarnation quite a bit and there are compelling cases of children born to a family yet speaking another language and having memories of other families that are far away and have never met....I think it's fascinating. Could be we inhabit these flesh bound orbs like an electrical charge and need to recharge from time to time...my logical side says I'm of the church of "Don't have a clue" but these possibilities are more interesting than becoming dust and compost...don't believe in purgatory though....I think that's just fear which I'd hope wouldn't exist in a pure state of being...I have traveled to places that seemed familiar and I know was visiting for the first time and Mandarin came to me really, really easily having not grown up around it.

I believe that the soul is purchased from the Kia dealership. I believe the soul is created in Georgia.

I almost went with Aretha, Al Green, Etta James and James Brown as an answer

Humans just can't quite imagine that we aren't all precious can we?

We just have to be eternal somehow.

I hope not if people have to keep living through different eras of human suffering. Former slaves come back and somehow know deep inside that life still sucks but not as bad?

If there were only 2 people as in Adam and Eve, have we been creating new souls each year or were there billions to start with and they've been waiting their turn?

Don't get me started on the whole "where did Cain and Abel get their wives" issue.
This supposed almighty could put a bun in Eve's basket anytime he wanted to.....if you believe in immaculate conception

So, basically none of y'alls have any theological teaching to pass on to this curious unbeliever?

Romans 8: 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

One of my favorite verses because it makes just about every snake in the grass bullshit church building preacher squirm. If the chosen elect were predestined from the very foundation then i theorize that the soul is eternal. Perhaps the soul take on its physical from via a computer program (DNA)

A program can remain dormant on a flash drive, but it doesnt actually do anything until an intelligent being plugs it in and hits execute.

The penis enters the vagina and God hits the execute button. Wallah, a baby is born with all the programming it needs to grow and mature.

If matter is never created or destroyed (law of conservation of mass) then i believe it to be scientificly plausible for the "program" to continue even when the matter takes on a different form.

A lot of people like to limit god to a time line. If you look at a time line, there is distance between events. If you place a dot far anough between 2 points above the line, the dot can be equadistant to both moments of time. Now make your line a circle, and place a dot in the center. Now that dot is equadistant to all events on the time line. Now go a step farther, and make the time line a double helix like a strand of DNA, and run a line straight though the center (God) now god is the constant, and time (his program) wraps around him, now i can be created in 1986 and your mother can be created in 1858. But to God we were created at the same instant, the beginning, his constant, and were placed on the line by himself, the constant.

Perhaps out brains have been prgrammed to be limited in the dimensions we can understand. We understand height, length, width, and we have discovered time as the 4th dimension. But physicists theorize there are as many as 13 dimensions. Perhaps concious life is a dimension, perhaps angels and demons exist in another dimension? Perhaps God is in a dimension we cant see, and that is why he gave us a book, something we can understand, to communicate with us?

I know critically thinking and theorizing and looking at lifes biggest questions from all sorts of angles is too hard for liberals. Thats why i stopped being a liberal when i learned to critically think.

In before "lol flying spaghetti monster" and intellectual superiority complexes.

I dunno, lots of liberals get stoned too.

Meh i kinda figured the thread was just to troll. But i like thinking about this shit anyway.

Same here. Dan Brown got me curious about the topic, when he discussed an experiment happening at CERN in one of his books. They were trying to discover the actual weight of a soul. True fact in a fiction novel??? Got me. It's been researched in the early 1900's, and again even more recently.

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/column.php?id=204863

In 1988, Noetic Science carried out experiments on the largest number of patients and concluded that the human soul weighs 1/3,000th of an ounce. The experiments were carried out by East German researchers who weighed more than 200 terminally ill patients just before and immediately after their deaths. In each case the weight loss was exactly the same – 1/3,000th of an ounce.

Fasinating, if you open your mind up to the possibilities....
