The only heaven humanity has ever found is Earth.

That would make us the souls.

Ever heard of Terry Pratchett? He's huge in Britain (was the biggest selling author before JK Rowling came along) probably most famous in US for that book he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman (Good Omens). He has a series of books about tiny warlike blue people called the "Wee Free Men" who believe that they have already died and this is their heaven, which involves a lot of fighting (a la Valhalla).

I read somewhere that they were making a Wee Free Men movie... ah yes, here we go.
