Marion County DA is shirking his duty.

I am a lifelong hunter who has been shot at a couple times myself. There is no plausible excuse for such carelessness.

This is involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment, not an accident by any stretch of the imagination.

This guy needs to go to jail. He needs to lose his hunting privileges for life. He probably should also lose his drivers license and be forbidden from using power tools, machinery, or anything else that could possibly be dangerous to anybody when operated by a moron.

If the victim was hiding behind a bear and the bullet went through the bear and killed him, that would be an accident.

Any other possible scenario is a homicide with all responsibility falling on the shooter. No different than firing into a crowded schoolyard IMO.

I agree--sounds like negligent homicide to me. I mean seriously, how does anyone shoot a firearm at something without being absolutely certain about what they're firing at? "I thought he was a bear because he was wearing dark clothing." Unless his "clothing" was a bear costume, then he's either an idiot, a liar, or both.

I got shot at once. The ridiculous part was I was on a well-marked hiking trail about 50 yards from the trailhead (which is where the shots came from).

I was going to say something slick, but this is a sad story. :(

As much as I disagree with Maris and barfo it is sad you people got shot. Sorry to hear that, all my problems are petty and insignificant in comparison.

Shot AT, not hit (in my case).

There is a memorial/thank you marker built of concrete and stone where I now deer hunt, near South Ice Cave, thanking the EMTs and St. Charles Hospital and Doernbecher Hospital for saving a 12yo girl's life after she was shot a few years back. About 20 years ago, a 9 yo boy was shot and killed by his uncle in the Willamette forest. He said he heard something in the bushes and thought it was a deer.

Oregon requires all hunters under 18 to take a hunter education course.

Despite the obvious need to include adults in that requirement, ODFW continually refuses to do so. It's frustrating.

I took it as a child and later with my sons. It's an excellent course and a lot of fun. It is taught by volunteers and costs the government nothing. Both my father and my cousin taught it for years.

I have a couple friends who despite being friends I would never be around them with guns because they don't understand they're not toys and there's no do-overs if you err.

Same. I heard one bullet thunk into a tree near me. Not sure where the other shot went.

Then I called out "Missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me", and they stopped shooting.

Or maybe it was something else I yelled. Can't be sure.
