For Thorn, It Will Be Cold, Hard Assessments Starting Wednesday
April 13, 2008, 1:25 am Rod Thorn says it?€™s too early to make key decisions, on who he wants to add and subtract, who he wants to draft. But he also admits those decisions will be made very soon?€?and are likely to lead to an ?€œaggressive?€? off-season. In their own assessments, beat writers look at the roster and break it down. One constant: Richard Jefferson is on the block in part, as one rival team official put it, ?€œRichard is mostly about Richard?€?.

Richard Jefferson: Nets didn't 'click' - Julian Garcia - New York Daily News</div>

The Dave D article breaks down Thron's quote on the off season, and the following about RJ:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>One Eastern Conference official, who requested anonymity so as not to devalue one of Thorn's chief trading assets, said, "He's developed a reputation for being a selfish player," which was a mouthful, considering Jefferson was averaging 23 points on only 15 shots per game. "Not so much from his play, but his attitude. A lot of people think that Richard is mostly about Richard."

Another East official was more blunt: "What's the difference between him and Corey Maggette?" he riddled. "Maggette makes only $7 million a year. (Jefferson) is very good, but he's way overpaid for his talent level."</div>

Throne said this about Nenad (also from the Dave D link)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>We'll have to see where he is after a summer of work</div>

Perhaps that means they plan on picking up his QO?

And about Sean:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>As for Sean Williams, he came as advertised: He is a world-class athlete with an amateur's head, the kind of rookie who will sing and scream in the shower minutes after suffering a crushing defeat -- which was the case against Phoenix two weeks ago. He might mature, he might not. But the Nets may not be willing to wait around to find out.</div>

Yikes

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>A lot of people think that Richard is mostly about Richard.</div>

I happen to be one of those people but I was a big RJ before Vince arrived. I have a lot of his 2002-2004 dunks on VHS tape somewhere...

the last comment thorn said about sean may be why we've been seeing more of swift playing lately.

RJ + Sean for Brand?

Some tough assessments in that piece. Also, Thorn isn't much enamored of Josh Boone as a starter.

Note in mid-season, Dave D wrote that Frank wasn't certain that Boone and Williams were a long term solution.

damn. that's it. and I was looking for a reason why Sean is on the bench with 5 minutes left and Nets down by 25... Come on Sean, from now on you sing only after wins!

as ive and many have said before, dont let the numbers fool you. rj is an overpriced role player who makes WAY to much. honestly, corey maggete is better then rj

oh yeah, and its prefectly fine for RJ and vince to laugh after 20 pt losses while they sit on the bench but sean cant sing in a fricken shower. sigh, this team is a mess. starting to think this team has alot more locker room problems then we may know of.

I don't think Thorn has earned the right to make any of these decisions.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>As of now, the Nets will pick around 10th and 21st, but that could change after the lottery balls fall. Thorn believes he can get "a player who can help us fairly soon at 10," but many of his peers believe the Nets will be actively shopping the picks for veteran talent.</div>

That's the part that really annoys the heck out of me. Are they really thinking they'll get a veteran good enough to make them an elite team or something?

Devin Harris: Keep him, he's the PG of the future
Vince Carter: Keep him, he's a fan favorite and who knows maybe with offseason surgery he'll come back in vintage form
Richard Jefferson: Dump him, if we can somehow get him involved for Brand that would be great
Nenad Krstic: Dump him, yeah he's still young and can stretch the D but I'm tired of these European pussys in the paint
Josh Boone: Dump him, unless he can get 10x stronger and less injury prone just clean house
Sean Williams: Keep him, we need energy off the bench and if he can mature he can provide that
Marcus Williams: Dump him, we need ENERGY in a backup PG (See Toronto) and that's the last thing Marcus provides
Trenton Hassell: Dump him, he was good on D but we don't really need him
Stromile Swift: Keep him, more energy and someone to show Sean how to play
Bostjan Nachbar: Keep him, he's been a good source of scoring off the bench when he's on
DeSagana Diop: Keep him, he a good rebounder and a big body in the paint. Someone just needs to show him how to put the ball in the basket
Mo Ager: Keep him, he's the type of instant scoring play off the bench that we can use
Darrell Armstrong: Don't care, if he retires than he's gone but if not I wouldn't mind dumping him or keeping him
Keith Van Horn: Sign him to a multi year deal with a fat contract to resserect the team

Draft well and hope for LeBron in 2010 and were in good shape for Brooklyn..

So you'd like to keep Stromile Swift and KVH before Stro. I really hope that post was for satirical purposes.

Keith Van Horn is preparing to bring the Nets back to their old glory days. He's the exact piece the Nets have been looking for.

I'm guessing you were born without a sense of humor. Yes, KVH was OBVIOUSLY a joke. I don't understand what your saying tho. I'd keep Stromile Swift and KVH before Stro? huh?

He probably meant Sean Williams and KVH before Stro, because they both play PF.

I meant before Boone
The beginning part of the post made sense, which is why I assume you were serious about the KVH part. There were some people who actually wanted Van Horn to play, when got traded to us.

If that's true I've lost complete trust in Thorn and L. Frank...How in the hell does he think Jason Collins is a starter for 5+ seasons and then conversely not like Boone? The kid is 23, he's still improving and he's averaging 9.5 pts and 8.2 rebounds as a starter while playing being our best defensive big man.

The only thing I could say against him would be that he doesn't particularly work well with Nenad...but that could either be A) improved over time or
be because they are both centers

I hope Thorn retires soon...cause Kiki imo will be the guy to fire Frank and change our culture as a team.

I've always seen Boone as a rotation or bench player, which is great if we get a real starter in here.

thron may have confused the steam from sean's hot shower with something else.

bokibokibokiboki

Sean's 2nd half of the season has been disappointing, but he's shown flashes of greatness. He's farther a long offensively than anyone could have guessed pre-draft, and I certainly had no idea that his shotblocking ability would translate as well as it has. His first start against a Shaq-lead Miami Heat was a 20/8/2(block)/2(steal) game. Later in the season he got himself a Nets rookie record with blocked shots in a game. It's obvious that what's holding him back is a lack of basketball experience (which holds both physical and mental conclusions) and not a lack of talent. I don't understand how the beat writers report that Sean might not be untradable because he won't be ready for a couple of years. Well ok, but what championship do the Nets plan on winning anytime soon? Save Carter and DA we're one of the youngest teams in the league and its very probable that we're going to trade away our leaders in Vince and RJ. Sean is a work in progress but given his age and the state of the team he's on I think its a perfect match.

Sean's first start was the game he had the tip in dunk in the late stages of game to tie the game for Nets? He also had that game saving block against the Clippers. Since the sophomore rookie challenge can't think of anything else he did that was noticeable or something to look for in the future.

Boone and Williams need to hit the gym the entire off season. How about getting a guy like Kareem or Ewing to help out our bigs down low.

I second this idea.

please get rid of:

Krstic - his type of center is finished in this league. dump him. he is soft and has lost all of his low post game. no defense and is slow to guard the basket.

hassel - dont need him and his offense is terrible

boki- unless he resigns for low ball money. dude is a good player 40 out of 82 games if that many.

m will - too slow and reserved. we need a killer pg off the bench someone who acts like they want to be in the game.

frank - do i even need to go into it?

Yeah, that plan makes perfect sense

The one thing about Boki is that without a 2nd shooter off the bench he is exposed. Last season we had House and when Boki wasn't hitting he was and vice versa. He was totally exposed without somone else to pick up for him on off days. Every shooter has them, they just usually have teammates to make up for it.

If we could get Boki back relatively cheap and add another shooter to the bench then we will really be better.

lol singing in the shower ? thats why hes not playing.... hes a Goofy guy who just seems like a tough person and ppl need to accept that. look a shaq sizzle, hes goofy too but his coaches play him. btw, he needs more playing time before he ends up like marcus in season 2. and the nets Do Not want that. marcus out, nenad out, rj out, josh keep him. isnt that enough to get an all star in our team ???

I said show Sean how to play basketball. Nothing to do with off the court. Stromile at this point is like a more advanced version of Sean. Sean's ceiling is obviously higher than what Stromile is, but even watching Stromile power dunk on everyone can have a good affect on Sean.

I'm only talking about on court play. The drugs smilie was about you.

If Stro is the more advanced version of Smokey, trade Smokey now.
