Tech Tim Cook’s compensation not spared as Apple misses performance goals

As a result of Apple’s performance based executive compensation packages, CEO Tim Cook and other leaders within the company will be taking pay cuts. Apple missed internal revenue and operating income targets for 2016 by 3.7 and 0.5 percent respectively, resulting in a 15 percent cut for the CEO. Apple is reporting annual sales of $215.6 billion and operating income of $60 billion for the period ending September 24th 2016, according to a regulatory filing. Had the numbers not missed, Cook could have expected his 2015 compensation of $10.3 million to serve as a floor for 2016. Instead, the CEO will be hauling in $8.75 million. The drop is more severe than Apple’s actual miss, relatively speaking.

Exactly the way it should be. Too bad all large corporations don't do this. Way too many CEOs getting bonuses and golden parachutes for shitty stewardship......

I hope this lights a fire under Apple. Under Steve Jobs, the company innovated, and really changed how we all live.

IPod, iPhone, iPad, even Apple TV and iTunes.

In its core software, OSX and iOS, the company has been nothing short of brilliant. The best user experience, period.

In its hardware products, they pushed the envelope for battery life while delivering the highest of build quality along with performance.

Since Jobs died, the company has launched the Apple Watch and have otherwise been building bigger and faster versions of their existing product lines. I would call the watch a dud, and the old products are plenty good enough after years' use that the attraction of updates isn't very strong.

I would call the 5K iMac one of the most compelling computer purchases, especially at the time it was released.

Their big software offerings of the cloud kind have shown promise but underwhelmed over the longer term. Maps is nice, but so is Google Maps. ITunes for music pales in comparison with Spotify. Video streaming service is both expensive and of only adequate quality. Netflix renders better picture quality and 4K. They stumbled with iCloud until recently, and I still use Dropbox and google drive much more.

I like to shop computers and it is clear that Apple makes excellent hardware. I would buy a MacBook Pro to run Windows, if I had to run Windows, rather than all but a very few offerings from PC manufacturers like ASUS and Dell.

I have a laptop and iMac that benchmark at over 10,000 PassMark. To get a PC laptop with retina screen and similar speed is similar in price but lesser build quality (plastic). In exchange for build quality, you'll get a video game graphics card and less battery life.

You can certainly build DIY faster desktop systems, but you'll spend ~$1K for a 5K monitor alone, and more than $500 for 20% faster CPU, and likely several hundred more on graphics card. A $3000 iMac cones with a 1TB nvme drive, which will cost ~$500 for similar performance. You're basically at $2500 for the PC without case, power supply, cooler, etc. The iMac is as big as a monitor, while the PC will be a monitor plus at least a mini tower case.

That said, the new MacBook Pros are actually slower CPU than the previous model - not an interesting trend.

Apple made itself the largest company by making streaming media products, starting with the iPod. All the devices revolve around iTunes. They need to build this generation of device instead of just making the old ones bigger and faster.

The Apple TV isn't 4K. The iPad Pro isn't 4K. iTunes isn't 4K. There's 3 big ideas for Apple to generate renewed interest.. They're making Roku TVs, but Apple isn't licensing Apple TV to TV manufacturers (they do license CarPlay). There's a 4th.

There were rumors Apple would buy Netflix outright. What are they waiting for?

And so on.

Sorry, Tim. I want you to win. Counting the money isn't enough.
