There is really only one special interest group, and that is labor unions. Antony Davies of Duquesne has prepared a series of charts that summarize special interest political contributions from 1989 to 2009, based on data from Open Secrets. This chart is the most revealing; it shows that the overwhelming majority of special interest money goes to Democrats, and that unions dwarf everyone else. It’s actually even worse than the chart shows at first glance, since teachers’ unions are listed separately and account for another $50 million, virtually all of it given to Democrats

You need to change your title as the there is a difference between political contributions and lobbying efforts. Lobbying totals for 2009 alone were $3.49 billion. The financials services industry spent approximately $475 million in 2010.

Also this chart seems to be missing data as I really doubt that the democrats raised almost $300m more than the republicans during that period.

While I enjoy your posts for the most part, my first reaction was to hammer this biased remark. Then I realized that you had to be deliberate in your attempt to raise ones hackles.

It is just too obvious that the labor unions that make these contributions are the very select group of people that benefit from keeping their people in power, and I know you did not miss that.

Well, it doesn't include PAC money or lobbying. Limited to direct contributions to campaigns, right? But, nevertheless, your comment is false. Look at the chart. Labor Unions, Teachers Unions and Lawyers donate all or nearly all their money to Democrats. Very discriminatory.

Business contributions, taken as a whole, favor Republicans for sure. But plenty of donations are also made to Democrats.

rationalization for a behavior and a comment on facts are two different things. What you said in your original post was factually incorrect. What is correct is that business favors Republican candidates (as you would expect) and that Unions ignore them completely. Whether that is because all Republicans (and we are talking thousands of individual candidates with hundreds of different positions and opinions) or all Unions (dozens run by small groups of powerful leaders) are exteme in their views is up for debate.
