NBA Attendance Just Below '11-12 Year-End Figure; Pistons' Games Under 60% Capacity

NBA teams are averaging 17,081 fans per game this season to date, down slightly from the league's average at the end of last season. The Bulls continue to lead all clubs, averaging 21,599 fans per game at United Center. During the team's first season at Barclays Center, the Nets are averaging 16,880 fans per game, which ranks the club 17th in league attendance. The Nets finished last season ranked last in attendance with 13,961 fans per game. The Kings are ranked last in the league in attendance with 12,574 fans per game. Only one team -- the Pistons -- has less than 60% capacity for its home games to date (57.5%) (THE DAILY).

Are these figures actual attendance or just ticket sales? Somehow I suspect those months of "sellouts" that the Blazers kept touting when there were tons of empty seats might be inflating the numbers.

I always interpret 'sold out' to mean the Blazers sold all their tickets, not how many people walk through the turnstiles.

What's a team supposed to do if they sell the ticket and someone doesn't go?
