I remember when she came to the NBA. At that time I read an article and she was voted the single worst ref in the WNBA. But, at the time, she was a black female and nothing was going to stop her from being an NBA ref. Since then, I've read a couple of articles about her inability to properly ref a game. You'll notice players and coaches rarely talk to her and if so, only for a very short while. Makes me think there's a 'hands off' policy towards her. Kinda like she's going to be here and stink as long as she wants to as the NBA doesn't need any lawsuits and the publicity it would bring.

Yah, I hate to say it but she is a poor NBA referee. It honestly has nothing to do with the aforementioned circumstances, either.
 
They should allow women to referee games that are for man.

What's next? A female referee for NFL?
 
I doubt she's much (if at all) worse than any other ref, it's just that being the lone female ref in the NBA, she stands out.

She doesn't make a lot of calls, and when she does (unless they are too obvious) they're from left field. The players rarely even bark at her as they just seem to accept the fact she's going to make unbelievabley idiotic calls and that's all there is to it. As an example, in the WNBA ref article I read, a player would just be dribbling up court and she'd whistle her for traveling. Everybody would be stunned and have a quizical look on their face like, "What the %#@&!". It was guaranteed to happen 3 or 4 times per game. And she just continues it on to the NBA.
 
Where was the article that she was the worst ref in the WNBA? Are you pulling that out of your ass or can you back it up?

The NBA rates its refs every year. Players and coaches rate the refs. Palmer has has consistently positive ratings. Not the best but very very far from the worst.

Of course she makes some bad calls. Who doesn't?

Why don't you admit you hate her because she's the only female ref? Damn near every "man" in this thread does.

Must really suck, thinking you;re superior, then seeing women referee basketball and run for president and do all these other things and never even ask your permission.

She really is bad. I dunno about the worst but shes among the worst.
 
The problem with Violet is that she referees every game like she's out to prove a point. And unfortunately when that's your goal, you end up trying to rise above the game. You become a contrarian, trying to make controversial calls just because you don't want to look like a pushover.

I think she is the worst ref in the game. I have no doubt a woman can be a decent official, and I think most people could care less that a woman is officiating a man's game. The irony of the situation is that she makes it a bigger deal than it is by trying to overcompensate for HER perceived stereotype and thus makes some terrible calls. Just because she wants to prove a point.

It's a ridiculous situation that could be remedied fairly easily. Either can her ass or tell her to stop being so overly uppity in a situation where nobody is persecuting her for her gender. Get over it and ref the game like you're supposed to and nobody will care.

And if I'm not mistaken, she was the one who ruled Devin Harris' half-court game winner no good, without even seeing the replay. *edited: Misogynist comments aren't allowed*

Whether the misogyny is joking or not, it's not appropriate. If you seriously want to discuss Violet Palmer's refereeing, feel free...but do it without taking shots at her gender or women in general.

To me, it has nothing to do with gender... But what I am opining is that she was considered the worst ref in the WNBA, and when she applied for the NBA I think she got a free pass as both a novelty and in the name of diversity. Well, she's now the worst ref in the NBA and I see far better refs being let go. I also have noted (and heard on various sports shows for the last few years) that there is a reason players are not allowed to complain to her very much and coaches & players rarely talk to her like they do the other refs. I am also saying that I disagree with this. One, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs... is either good enough to ref or not- period. However, she is an obvious exception and I think it's wrong.

If I accidently offended crandc or anyone, then I do apologize.

I don't there's evidence that the NBA discriminates among its officials by sex. Dee Kantner was also hired along with Violet Palmer, and the NBA fired Kantner for not being good enough at her job. If you believe that the NBA wants the female officials around for "novelty/diversity," then their firing Kantner flies directly in the face of that theory.

You may think she's a bad official...I've thought various officials over the years were poor...but I have never seen any evidence provided that she's kept employed by the NBA simply because she's female, or that she's afforded protection from coaches/players due to her sex. I've seen coaches and players bark and chirp at her like they do other referees, and someone posted in one of the threads on the Blazers forum, last night, an account by BeerBoy of Larry Bird calling out negative things to Palmer.

Also, I'm highly skeptical that Palmer was considered the worst ref in the WNBA. Why would the NBA choose one of the worst refs? How does that benefit them? I'm not saying you're lying, but I'm skeptical of whoever made that claim, simply because it doesn't make any sense.

When she was let go there were some player comments in the mags that stated Palmer was way worse. Based on what I saw, I'd agree. That said, I'm no officiating expert. I only ref'd OSAA high school basketball for 1 year.

Well, that's a perfectly fine opinion to hold. I just don't see how that fits your theory of a gender-based conspiracy by the league. If they're willing to fire a female referee for incomptence (as they did Dee Kantner), why would they purposely choose the better ref to fire and retain the worse referee? And if there were such a conspiracy, why would they fire either female referee?

Thinking Palmer is a bad referee is fine. We all have our opinions about who's good at things and who isn't. I just don't see the evidence for a league protection scheme around Palmer.

I'm saying as a black female she has certain guarantees that other refs do not have, ie, the right to be the worst ref in the NBA and have 100% job security.
