Vipers Dominate Iowa Energy 146-135 in Game 1 of NBA D-League Playoffs

The No. 5 Rio Grande Valley Vipers (30-20, 1-0) topped the No. 3 Iowa Energy (31-19, 0-1) 146-135 tonight at State Farm Arena.
Darius Morris led the Vipers with a double-double 29 points and 11 assists. Houston Rockets assignees Robert Covington and Troy Daniels each added 26 points. Tony Bishop scored 18 points, and Dario Hunt scored 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Energy was led by Patrick Christopher with 32 points, followed by Larry Owens with 31 points. Curtis Stinson scored 30 points, and Jackie Carmichael added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

RGV started the game with a 7-0 lead before Stinson connected on a layup to put Iowa on the board 7-2. A hook shot from Owens tied the score at 16 points midway through the first quarter. Then, with 4:55 on the clock another shot from Owens gave Iowa its first lead, 22-21. The Energy's largest lead of the game came minute later with Iowa up 27-21. Parrom connected on a three-point shot, and Covington and Morris each made layups to put the Vipers back on top 28-27. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 38 points.

The lead changed seven times during the second quarter until Hunt connected on a dunk that put the Vipers ahead 59-57. RGV remained in the lead the rest of the game. At the half, RGV was on top 78-71.

The Vipers used the third quarter to build their lead and were up 114-100 heading into the fourth quarter.

With 9:57 on the clock in the fourth quarter, Talton made a three-pointer to give the Vipers their largest lead of the game 120-102. However, Iowa continued to fight back. By the 5:45 mark, the Energy had closed their deficit to 128-120. Parrom responded with a dunk, but Owens made a basket that sent Iowa on a 6-2 run to trail RGV 130-126. Covington stopped the run with a layup, and RGV remained in control to win 146-135.

The Vipers travel to Iowa to wrap up Round One of the NBA D-League Playoffs. Game Two is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at noon at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. If necessary, Game Three will tipoff Monday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Iowa. Fans can watch the games live on YouTube or listen live on Fox Sports 1700 AM. Locally, Vipers fans can attend a Watch Party, hosted by Pepper's at Uptown in McAllen, Texas Saturday, April 12 at noon.
