The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (35-15, 2-0) topped the Maine Red Claws (26-24, 0-2) 98-97 tonight at State Farm Arena. RGV advances to play the winner of the Tulsa 66ers-Canton Charge series in round two of the NBA Development League Playoffs.
The Vipers were led by Glen Rice, Jr. who scored a double-double 27 points, 12 rebounds. D.J. Kennedy also scored a double-double 20 points, 12 rebounds. Tyler Honeycutt added 18 points and Chris Johnson scored 13 points.
Josh Selby led the Red Claws with 22 points, followed by Chris Wright with 21 points. Curtis Jerrells added 19 points, and Jermaine Taylor scored 16 points. Omar Reed contribute 8 points, 10 rebounds.
The Vipers took control of the game in the first half. At the end of the first quarter, the Vipers were up 23-16. Jerrells scored 12 of his 19 points in the second quarter, but it was not enough to help the Red Claws pass RGV. At the half, the Vipers held a 50-36 advantage.
RGV held on to its lead throughout the third quarter. By the end of the quarter, the Vipers were up 77-60.
Maine fought back in the fourth quarter. The Red Claws started a 20-2 run with 7:42 on the clock. Selby tied the game at 92 points with 48 seconds on the clock. Rice, Jr. responded with two shots at the line to put the Vipers back up 94-92. Honeycutt and Kennedy each sank shots at the line to give the Vipers a 98-94 advantage. With less than a second on the clock, Jerrells sank a three-pointer for the Maine. RGV won 98-97.
