Whom do you prefer if you had been able to pick any of these 3 players - ie Charlotte offered #2 for #3 straight up.

Scoot may end up the better player, but he wasn't a need, and now this whole thing has turned in to an ugly powder keg. Not fair to Scoot, and sure as hell, not fair to Dame. Miller looks real good. And I highly doubt he wouldn't have exceled with Dame.

Miller also might have solved the need for size inside, which still is rearing it's ugly head.

This team NEEDS talented players. We can’t seem to trade for them or sign them so we have to draft them. Scoot was BPA and Dame is 33. Taking Scoot was the most logical decision and the best thing for the team.

Miller wouldn't have swayed Dame one way or the other..rookies are rookies...we drafted the best rookie on the board available. Moving forward Dame is not part of the new era ..that was his choice. Scoot really loves being here. Turns out we could have traded for Siakam but he didn't want to come to Portland (according to Toronto's reporter) In retrospect, Dame too failed to bring free agents to Portland...Jimmy Butler succeeded in getting free agents to Miami. I have a real problem with Miller delivering a murder weapon to his friend. I don't want that around our locker room no matter how well he shoots a basketball or how tall he is. I don't think Wemby would've kept Dame in Portland...as Chauncey said, Dame's decision was not just about basketball. He's losing his wife. He probably wants to put some miles between his marital problems and his job.

I like Scoot a lot and from what we've seen so far, he is as predicted. Blazer fans have seen Dame improve his driving skills since his earlier years and become an instant 26+ppg player because of it and it's incredibly special that Scoot can do the same from the get go. For reference, it's no surprise players like Morant, Rose, Kyrie, and Westbrook can reach 27ppg.

Of course, since I'm kind of the resident Amen fan, I personally just think Amen would've fit better with Sharpe AND Dame/Simons so I voted for him.

Miller also would've fit well with the core but even though it's summer league, he has demonstrated all the traits I mentioned would likely be problematic with him (can get passive, can be afraid to show up, mental lapses on both ends). I still think he'll be an All-star but he's Chris Bosh (will have a 'soft' reputation). Scoot is Carmelo (would've gone #1 in most other drafts within the decade, elite scorer, probably the smoothest scorer in the draft). Amen is like Wade (by that....just explosive, well rounded, elite two way potential, good IQ, can't shoot 3s). Wemby is Lebron, obviously ( no Darko since Wemby takes up both the top European prospect and Lebron's role as a 'generational player').

Don't take these comparisons too seriously, obviously, but it is uncanny how much this draft resembles 2003.

Need got them Sam Bowie instead of Jordan.

Need got them Oden instead of Durant.

Need got them Martell Webster instead of Chris Paul or Deron Williams inflated ego.

Stupid drafting got them Meyers Leonard instead of a loaf of bread.

I doubt Damian would've been anymore willing to play with Miller or Thompson than he is Scoot. Probably the only player he'd be willing to play with is Wemby (but even that is debatable).

Draft the potential "once in a generation" talent, even if it's the same as your best player.

3-4 summer league games seems a little early for a what-if thread.

1) If it ensured Dame was staying I would've taken Miller, otherwise I would've taken Amen.
2) I was 100% confident Dame was NOT staying if we took Scoot and about 90% confident he wouldn't stay if we took Miller. Probably 95% he wouldn't stay if we took Amen.
3) With all that said, I'm fairly confident Joe knew if we drafted at 3, Dame is gone. So I would've taken Amen because he had the highest ceiling.

I think Dame had made his decision before the draft. I think he didn’t request the trade before the 1st so that Jerami could get his bag.

What Free Agents went to Miami because of Butler. I know Dame sold Grant on Portland.

I quite agree. So in a way, maybe Damian lied to the Blazers.

You should totally do a podcast on that. Call him "Damian Lie-lard"

HA! License to print money!

I don't like Amen more because he would have fit better, I just think with his height that if he learns to shoot he might become a more valuable player than Scoot. But just as likely that Scoot's intensity and leadership will make him more valuable. Who the hell knows?

What???? Damian would never lie! Only Joe is the liar!!!!!!!!

I would not have been upset if they picked Thompson over Miller, but I would've been upset over Scoot.

I think Thompson will be a really good player, he kind has a Jalen Rose vibe about him, but with more upside.

Scoot is going to be a star. After seeing him play I'm convinced we made the right choice.
He may very well be, but I think the same can be said for Miller. He has a beautiful shot, good instincts , with real nice athleticism . You can't teach size.

He's not a free agent. WTF
He's conducting himself as a free agent and filed for the right to demand a trade....that's not a guy honoring his contract. Superstars are apparently always free agents. Even if it means not playing for the team they signed with. For what it's worth I'm not a fan of this practice at all...Dame is legally guilty of tampering as far as I'm concerned.

good article...
Now most stars follow a simple, lucrative, low-risk formula: sign for as much as they can, as soon as they can—and ask for trades later (if necessary), knowing they’ll almost always get it. “You don’t need free agency,” Falk said, “because these teams, the minute the guy says `I don’t want to be on the team,’ they accommodate him.” He added, “I think it’s terrible.”

Implement a non compete for super stars that sign max extensions, till their contract is up.

I went back and forth between Amen and Miller if Scoot was picked by Charlotte. Both looked good to me.

None of the three made a difference for Dame IMO. He was hoping the pick was traded for a vet. But for now, I see no difference (from Dame's perspective) between Scoot and Amen in terms of making Dame happy. Amen is a PG just like Scoot...at least for the next couple of years. If he becomes a lights-out shooter he can be a point forward.

I voted Miller. With the caveat that I would have asked Dame if it would be enough for him to stay if we weren't able to bring in another star.
If Dame said that wouldn't be enough then I think I would have gone with Scoot.

I think Dame + Miller is better than Scoot.

Maybe for a couple years, but as Dame starts to fade when he's 35 or 36 years old, that's when Scoot will most likely start to really take off. So really it depends on whether you think Miller or Scoot will end up being the better player.
