NEW YORK (AP) — A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday when "out-of-control" shoppers desperate for bargains broke down the doors at a 5 a.m. sale. Other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man, and customers shouted angrily and kept shopping when store officials said they were closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.

At least four other people, including a woman who was eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island closed for several hours before reopening.

Shoppers stepped over the man on the ground and streamed into the store. When told to leave, they complained that they had been in line since Thursday morning.

Nassau police said about 2,000 people were gathered outside the store doors at the mall about 20 miles east of Manhattan. The impatient crowd knocked the man, identified by police as Jdimytai Damour of Queens, to the ground as he opened the doors, leaving a metal portion of the frame crumpled like an accordion.

"This crowd was out of control," said Nassau police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming. He described the scene as "utter chaos."

Dozens of store employees trying to fight their way out to help Damour were also getting trampled by the crowd, Fleming said.

Items on sale at the store included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as "The Incredible Hulk" for $9.

Damour, 34, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 6 a.m., police said. The exact cause of death has not been determined.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital, where she and the baby were reported to be OK, said police Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

Police said criminal charges were possible in the case, but Fleming said it would be difficult to identify individual shoppers. Authorities were reviewing surveillance video.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority," said Dan Fogleman, a company spokesman. "At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County Police as they investigate what occurred."

Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling 'I've been on line since yesterday morning,'" she said. "They kept shopping."

Shoppers around the country line up early outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving in the annual bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday. It got that name because it has historically been the day when stores broke into profitability for the full year.

Fucking disgusting. How can this herd of morons have such little empathy for a fellow man. Not only did they trample the guy to death, when the store is closed down they complain? Really? I hope that police can review the store video tapes and press some kind of charges on these sick people that are willing to trample someone to death to save 100 dollars on a new TV. And to think people wonder why America is looked upon so poorly by the rest of the world.

In this situation I dont think you can really place much blame on walmart. These people broke down the door before trampling the guy to death. I guess walmart could stop people from lining up outside, but the majority of the blame should be placed on the people bum rushing in to save a buck. Seriously, what can you possibly want so badly that you'd break down the door and be willing to trample a guy to death? I can't even imagine.

I hope they can identify people for prosecution.

I don't blame Walmart, its just the type of people that shops there, at least in my experience. A much lower class of consumer versus say....Target. Its like in college, I worked at both Meier and Frank and Nordstrom....working at nordstrom was 10000x better because the clientele was much more civilized, whileI at M and F, it was a bunch of scrubs and assorted trash.

you've got to also consider the types of people who "camp out all night" for sales are pretty friggin sorry too.....dunno.....its thanksgiving...you stand in the cold for 5 hours to get a plasma?

american idiots!

Disgraceful. At times like these I really hope karma is real.

Yeah. The deals weren't even all that great this year.

We've never camped out on black friday. Seems dumb given that thanksgiving is a holiday...but then again, not everyone has a family to celebrate it with.

In past years, me and my dad would go to Kohls. That is the place to go, everything is pretty much 50% off or more. You can get a ton of nice clothing on black friday, although we don't have any money this year because of the economy, so we didn't go clothing shopping at Kohls. We just went to circuit city/bestbuy in the morning.

haha....i went to Kohl's with my mom on a black friday a few years ago....first and last time I ever went to a black friday AM sale....the line was like 45 minutes and was just a madhouse....not my cup of tea......

I usually hit up a store in the afternoon or something.....no lines...... some deals left over.

I don't know. Walmart did nothing to encourage a frenzied horde of shoppers to assemble Friday morning?
Seems to me they did everything they could to assemble a frenzied mob. They just didn't want it to be quite that frenzied. Inciting a riot is a crime.

I'm sure this is the first time I've ever used frenzied so many times in one post. Frenzied, frenzied, frenzied.

And near LA there was a gun battle at a Toys-R-Us.

The shallow end of the gene pool seems real crowded sometimes.

How so? What type of advertising for that store did you read to lead you to your conclusion? Please post the link for us to review what you have investigated that places the store's advertising and other promotionals as the precursor for this tragedy.

If you've ever met New Yorkers in your travels anywhere, you can hardly be surprised.

They are what they are.

Give me a break. When people act like idiots, it's not Bush's fault, or Wal-Mart's fault, or the government's fault. It's their fault. Period.

Not true! As anyone can plainly tell from reading the O/T section that everything bad in the world is Bush's fault and everything good to the praises of liberals.

You think it was some sort of coincidence that a crowd assembled at WalMart early Friday morning after Thanksgiving? Please provide links for us to review backing your opinion.

Dude...you cant blame Walmart at all on this. There are thousands of stores across the country that have similar crazy deals where people start assembling at 5am. Are all those stores trying to inciting a riot but just not very good at it??? Its not Walmarts fault that they attract more stupid people than other stores. Should we ban "Black Firday" because of the crowds that happen because of it?

"But your honor, they were selling blue ray players so cheap that it was criminal!"

Should there be laws they dont allow too good of a deal on products because it might incite a riot?

Obviously all my questions are rhetorical but come on...

Capitalism demands blood sacrifices. This man's family should be proud that he died so that 100 odd people could save on consumer goods just a little faster than the people who didn't kill someone.

Is "trying" important here? If you yell fire in a crowded theatre, are you blameless if you didn't intend for anyone to get hurt?

You think it is just some sort of accident they get the shoppers they do?

Should we ban "Black Firday" because of the crowds that happen because of it?

Not anymore than we should ban soccer due to the occasional riot.

Should there be laws they dont allow too good of a deal on products because it might incite a riot?

Why shouldn't there be?

Obviously all my questions are rhetorical but come on...

My answers are rhetorical too.

Yet nobody was trampled in the other stores. Think man, think.

I knew you were just making it up. Never let the facts get in the way of your opinion.

Yep, you're right. Any retail store that puts its merchandise on sale the day after Thanksgiving is definitely encouraging people to kill other people. It's just common sense.

Seems like kind of an extreme view, when you exaggerate it to absurdity.

Why blame the store?

This is clearly a manufacturer's responsibility issue. Sue the makers of all products sold at Wal Mart.:ohno:

Re: OT: Walmart worker killed by frenzied shoppers

What? So you are blaming Walmart too?...or sarcasm?
I am blaming the employees in the store. Nobody else was trampled in any other store, so it's pretty simple to come to a conclusion. Walmart are responsible for their employee's actions, so in turn, they are to blame.
