There will be no easy road for the Washington Stealth to repeat as National Lacrosse League champions after a pothole-filled regular season ended with a bad 18-10 loss Saturday night that concluded an 8-8 regular season.
The Stealth was denied the opportunity to guarantee a first-round home playoff game by the loss to a Rochester Nighthawks team locked in third place in the East and with nothing to really play for.
The difference came down to Rochester goaltender Matt Vinc, who made saves and stopped several quality scoring chances against the Stealth, which came in as the highest-scoring team in the league, averaging nearly 13 goals a game.
"We just wanted to stay on track entering the playoffs," Vinc said after making 43 saves and showing why he is considered one of the best goaltenders in the NLL. "Our defense did a good job and the offense put up 18, and that takes a lot of pressure off of me. I like the way we're playing right now. This was a tough trip for us and they're good shooters, but I had a couple of good looks at quality shots and was able to make the save."
